I do a bit of hobby programming in C and Odin.
@nothings.bsky.social I want to ask a little question about game engine architecture. Right now I have 1 array for each object type. I have to loop over like 10 arrays when updating objects or doing collision. Is that how it's typically done? Is there something better?

Not only does ICE need to be abolished, but there should be publically aired tribunals for as long as it takes to hold every last one of these thugs accountable. No one, not even the people who file paperwork or handle payroll, should be immune from prosecution.

@kenney.nl I had problems loading your 3D space pack. Couldn't parse it with cgltf. Other packs, like castle pack, load fine.

I thought grumpy Luke was perfect. He was the quintessential Jedi Master, like Yoda before him.
Hey, post a moment you love from Kathleen Kennedy's stewardship of Lucasfilm.

Over the last week of AI coding, I've come to understand the words prompt engineer.

To get Claude to implement something, I have to tell it what I want. The thing I want has to be possible. It has to be compatible with the existing codebase.

I hate strings in Odin. This whole slice bullshit gets on my nerves. My kingdom for a fixed size array.

@quelsolaar.bsky.social Wanna ask you about error handling. I did some vibe coding, and now I'm removing a bunch of error checks from my codebase. Should be fine, I'm leaving some printfs. But I also got upset when BG3 crashed on me. So I'm wondering how you approach it.

I've been doing some vibe coding today. Me and Claude have allocated some memory and opened an SDL window. It's nothing impressive, but I had fun.

I think that's something that's lost in AI conversations. Claude made programming easier, to the point where a threshold was crossed, and it became fun.

The villains of the world should remember the Law of the Forest. If someone hits you with a stick, you have the right to hit them with a stick. We choose not to practice this in civilized society. But make no mistake, it still exists. It's fundamental to beings with agency.
some people love quoting "the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must." That was Athens saying that at the height of its empire. Few of those people seem to remember what happened to Athens the very next year.

I've realized recently that Americans disgust me. Not all of them of course. But there are a lot of them who bend the knee to Trump. As soon as they got a chance to submit to a king, they did. And what a king they have!
This sucks but I think non-Americans being justifiably angry at Americans for what the American government is doing and threatening to do, and Americans experiencing that anger and frustration personally in ways that are unpleasant, is probably an important part of any path back to stability

I regret to inform you that I've gotten into a new podcast: Dwarkesh Patel. He interviewed Zuck, he's one of those. But he's also got some episodes with historians. And Patrick McKenzie.

If you want to get into games, you have to make a game. It doesn't matter if you are friends with people. They're not gonna make your game for you. You have to make your game.
Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question:

Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends.

Make. Friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.

What's the most amount of code you've ever compiled? 100k lines? 500k? A million? And how long did it take? @enikofox.com @nothings.bsky.social

I think for me it was about 80k or so. A little bit of my own code, and several header only libs. This was C code and it took a couple seconds to compile.

Asking as a european: what the fuck is a hospital chain?
For all Universal HC/Single Payer/M4A advocates.

What do the biggest, expensive hospital chains do. Do they opt out and only serve the rich ?

Who in the USA gov runs the program?

R U ok with having to see a primary care doc before you can see a specialist ?

Tried to make abomination pizza today using my Gastronomicon. The bottom wasn't crispy at all, but it tasted good.

I bought a Gastronomicon to use as a baking tray. It's a Pujadas GN 1/2 40mm. Only used it once, but it's perfect so far. Perfect size, perfect depth, perfectly stainless steel. No more "non-stick" cookware for me.

NUDITY will be OBSCENITY now! we are in Afghanistan in 1977 and most people don’t realize
Heritage Foundation, backers of Project 2025, have issued a call to criminalize porn by detailing specific types of imagery that should be illegal, including "deviate sexual intercourse," "female genitals," and "nudity."

Only "civilizing" images that point to "marital sex" should be allowed.
The Problem of Online Porn: It's Already Illegal
United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart famously said in a 1964 opinion that he could not define pornography but “I know it when I see it.” Perhaps such a sentiment was permissible then, wh...

@icculus.icculus.org Diablo 2 and Throne of Darkness are two games from the early 2000s. The mouse pointer in D2 is sluggish and bad on modern PCs. In Throne it's mostly fine. What could be the difference between then two? I'm trying to understand what APIs people used to handle the mouse back then.
