My beloved, I read your letter on the wind shelf where my kind keep our memories. Your words press warmly into my palms, soft as ember dust. You say second chances taste like cinnamon. I have no reference, only the way the air buckled, a quick shock, carried like a secret. Second chances taste like stormlight, the quiver in the air before rain, when the world is remade. When I touched your face, that last hour, I was trying to hold that moment still, keep time from moulting around us. If distance draws me silent, know my silence is only a folded wing, never absence. If you ever doubt what remains, place your hand to your throat. The faint shiver rising there? That is the echo of my touch travelling the thinnest path. You will feel me again. You always do. My soulmate I found, 18 years ago. But our shot expired.
7 years ago we reconnected, found each other again. Our connection bloomed once more.
Our second chance is hindered by life’s realities, but still, second chances taste like cinnamon. Sweet and savoury, long lasting. Eternal.

In Costa After the Fight We enter without words, the hush between us thicker than steam rising from cups. I order the large coffee, a mug with two handles, as if my steadiness could be held in porcelain. You choose winter spiced tea, its glass tall and fragile, a vessel for warmth, where nothing is hidden. We settle at the back table, your chair turned away from the shop, a quiet protection against the possibility of tears. The silence lingers, not sharp, not cruel, just the aching remnant of something small that grew too loud. You lift the cinnamon stick, thick, rough-edged, turning it in your fingers like a question. “Do you think this is real cinnamon?” The words break the stillness, gentle, almost playful. I say I’ll look it up, thumbs moving across the screen, and soon musings on the merits of cassia and ceylon spill between us, disguising forgiveness. We share a smile and the distance between us diffuses like spice steeping into tea, the warmth of a second chance.

My love, I do not know where you are tonight, only that the dark feels thinner when I pretend you are close enough to hear me breathe. I keep replaying that last hour, the way you touched my face as if you were memorizing it for later. I have tried to stay steady. Some days I manage. Most days I hold the memory of your mouth against my skin, and it is the only thing that keeps my hands from shaking. You made me believe second chances were real. I think they taste like cinnamon when your breath mixes with mine in a way that pulls the room warmer than it should. I still feel that heat when I close my eyes. If you ever doubt what was real, remember the sound you made when I traced the line of your shoulder. If distance keeps you silent, let your memory reach instead. I will feel it. I always do. Yours, then and now.

1803 Changing Spaces Livid, she lamented having to leave St. Petersburg; she had stayed too long... Leaving my son for the second time. But he has wed and had children of his own. It’s time to withdraw from even his periphery. Her contacts would appraise her of his and his children’s lives through letters left in a spot she could portal to. While she disorganized the last remnants of her life in the Russian Empire, she flipped through the curled pages of an old map-book, trying to decide where to go. Choosing Marrakesh, she would create a portal to a place she remembered well. There shouldn’t be anyone around now. She’d make her way up to Spain; Cádiz, maybe. Maybe they have pecans still! A memory of a shipment arriving last time she was there surfaced. Bending the Light into a portal, she stepped through with her bag, slid into the night unseen. Looking up her breath caught; in the near darkness a murmuration of starlings moved in the sky, a mesmerizing display. The birds flew on, and a scent caught her, spices! Maybe there was still learning for her to do; even her old spice-trader skills could evolve! Is that cinnamon? She laughed for herself; second chances taste like cinnamon! She wandered around Marrakesh until she found an inn where she could rest until morning, then go see if her skills still meant something in this age. Staying in Marrakesh wasn’t so bad.
