the future problem that’s the part nobody warns you about— how long something dying keeps walking past its own expiration date. we perform belief until the ground peels out from under us, quiet as hunger, elegant as ruin— already down, bruised, off balance, pretending we meant to fall. if i were to tell you this, you mustn’t tell anyone else: stop believing in living into the endings. everything always is forever until it isn’t.

like small caged animals i’m trying to write and nothing comes out-- nothing but words about the dark. i think about words. giggly. jiggly. jingle-jangely. turning this, strangely, into a dangerous story about chickens and eggs. no. stop. delete it. draw a map to the house where you lived when you broke up with your 8th-grade boyfriend. you’re not the ocean, you shouted out the passenger window of a car someone stole from the lot near the station. wave. waves was a good song by someone in the early 2000s. does anyone remember that? pinch poke. pushing against the stream. where did this thread go? anyway that ocean line is from a song i didn’t even know until years later. so who knows what i actually said. chickens and eggs. somebody always lies first.

Dog Tag On hold with the repair shop I draw concentric circles on a lavender piece of junk mail. I write my own name so many times it starts to feel vulgar— unspeakable. There’s a flyer telling me to be all I can be-- dog tags dangling. The small weight of a name you can’t put down. To pass the time, I make a list of the three things the world would need to know to save me. But nothing comes. Only my own breathing down the dumb phone and the blank page waiting.

untitled It takes a lot to find myself— closed on all sides, numb from too many years of trying. Even more to say how I ended up here, looking for somewhere else entirely. but that’s how it goes. the glimmer leads you into cold. the iron in your chest closes, means to protect, and ends up pushing everything away. indifference spreads on the floor, slow, certain, a dull static stain. this tired body repeating loneliness, this space opposing longing.

if you know what i mean he asks me what i remember and i know what he means. he wants something real that happened between us. but all i remember instead is the changing room in a discount clothing store— my grandmother beside me, her breasts drooping like a dog’s ears, her finger poking at my small kid middle, jeering as she called me fat, ugly, said nobody would ever want me— not with that pouty face, those doe-eyes, that body. and the weight of her voice, and the cost of food, and the long ledger of bad relationships and stupid choices all gather at once. so i give him the memory he’s reaching for— and something in the room rises from its corner, stretching, settling its heavy body across my chest, like it never once left me.

For Transport A memory like a bright wound: unbearable because it glows, because it won’t stop asking to be carried across whatever border I make. I keep writing nothing to declare, but the paper blisters with light— a small contraband sun desperate to escape the bureaucracy of my body. Transport isn’t the right word. It abducts. Grabs me by the scruff of my mind and drops me in the place I swore I’d never return. What I refused keeps crossing back over me— slipping the line, sliding past the guard in my chest. I try to nix it, make the refusal clean, administrative, final, but you know the three-letter word burning under the stamp, the one shaped like a mouth opening. Unbearable, the way the exile I chose still loops me toward that same bright heat, how I walk with it anyway, half-cocked and glimmer-drunk, that tripwire tension I can’t risk touching.

what i want is so easy to break caught between the moment i fold and call you and the moment i decide i won’t, we send small messages. i set a timer so i don’t answer too soon. then my mind interrupts— a line i once read: some powerful man calling a woman a bomb. my desire, as my distress, spreads slowly outward. i think about saying your name in that scared little-girl voice i hate in myself. i stay quiet as a fault line. the timer goes. my hand moves. i’m holding my breath. you’re not coming. so i sit with what shakes me— the want i won’t name without fear of what it opens.
