She peeked under her tinfoil tiara, blew hair from her eyes & lifted her nose into the air. It smelt like salt, slippery, cleaned by cats & the singing of mermaids. She detached herself from the known land and hummed in reply to the portal. On the rocks, plastic bags billowed on gusty winds. #vss365

I have no reference, only the way the air buckled, a quick shock, carried like a secret. Second chances taste like stormlight, the quiver in the air before rain, when the world is remade. When I touched your face, that last hour, I was trying to hold that moment still, keep time from moulting around us. If distance draws me silent, know my silence is only a folded wing, never absence. My love, I do not know where you are tonight, only that the dark feels thinner when I pretend you are close enough to hear me breathe. I keep replaying that last hour, the way you touched my face as if you were memorizing it for later. I have tried to stay steady. Some days I manage. Most days I hold the memory of your mouth against my skin, and it is the only thing that keeps my hands from shaking. You made me believe second chances were real. I think they taste like cinnamon when your breath mixes with mine in a way that pulls the room warmer than it should. I still feel that heat when I close my eyes. If you ever doubt what was real, remember the sound you made when I traced the line of your shoulder. If distance keeps you silent, let your memory reach instead. I will feel it. I always do. Yours, then and now.

Dog walking this morning. The strawberry trees or 'corbezzolo' are in full bloom.
When they turn red the fruits are edible though an acquired taste, bland & gritty but apparently full of antioxidants.
Arbutus unedo in Italian referred to as corbezzolo. Italy's national tree.
