It's almost Thanksgiving and that's the time for crime novels featuring teenage protagonists in 1984, trying to solve a murder, recover a missing friend and tangling with everyone from school bullies to a brutal Russian assassin. It's not October, but it's my book THAT OCTOBER!
Like a lot of you, hopefully, I'll be spending a lot less with huge corporations during the economic blackout that's covering Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

So here's a couple of good ways to buy my 1984-set high school crime novel THAT OCTOBER from other than the usual suspects. (more)

Handing back student work that’s been written by ChatGPT with a 0 followed by the comment “This essay will never stand in authentic wonder before the Beauty of God’s creation.”
Pope Leo XIV told students not to use artificial intelligence for homework, saying that AI ‘won’t stand in authentic wonder before the beauty of God’s creation.’

I take a break from reading Harlan to finally start reading Poppy Z. Brite, only to get jumpscared by Harlan in the acknowledgments page.

This is a pretty flawed argument. "You should be grateful that people want your work enough to steal it." Would someone say that to a sculptor or a creative who made material art? I don't think so. It's in vogue now to denigrate written art.
piracy is a completely aspirational problem for any author in america to have and i think anyone trying to stake out an anti-piracy position is a demon full stop

My soon to be 12 year old niece just showed me this animated cartoon she’s really into (she went as one of the characters for Halloween) and it’s pretty cool but I’m like “wow this is a little bleak” and looked it up and apparently it’s based on Harlan Ellison’s “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”

I NEED a horror movie adaptation of Hogg’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Okay, I’m sorry, Harlan, you are NOT convincing me that you’re a mild-mannered pussycat.

It’s kind of scary how much of this commentary on the hypnotic propagandizing and lulling effects of television applies (perhaps even more so) to social media.

"Last quarter, the average job opening received 242 applications — nearly triple the amount in 2017, when the unemployment rate was at a comparable level. That means that when someone submits a resume today, they have the abysmally low 0.4% chance of actually getting the job."
The real reason the job market is totally broken
Exclusive new data proves it: Applying to a job in 2025 is the statistical equivalent of hurling your resume into a black hole.

Every day I thank God that Harlan Ellison didn’t have to bear witness to this shit.

Does this sound creepily similar to what the current administration is doing to universities right now, to force them into following right wing ideology? Especially the threats re: withholding funding?

Starting a thread for Harlan Ellison’s The Glass Teat because holy hell are some of the observations in this book wildly applicable to our current historical moment.

It's kinda miserable watching what happened to musicians happen to authors. Traditional publishing getting less and less interested in doing the things that help people starting out and instead looking to parasitise the work they do to build their own audiences is the record company model.

RIP Udo Kier.

Apparently I must watch the Netflix Scooby-doo!

"Noted speculative fiction author &…curmudgeon Harlan Ellison voicing himself in a cartoon! I love that they used his cool early '70s wardrobe too; &…his rival was an HP Lovecraft homage voiced by Jeffery Combs!"
AdamInvader, Reddit
I am being completely sincere when I say that Udo Kier’s performance as Professor Pericles on SCOOBY-DOO: MYSTERY INCORPORATED is easily in his top 5 best roles.

RIP to one of the greats.
