In today’s least surprising local news, speed display signs aren’t enough to make our roads safer.
Speed display signs only slow drivers down by 1km/h: Halifax report
Halifax has installed nearly 50 speed display signs around the municipality, but on average they only slow down drivers by less than one km/h, according to a new staff report.

Great timing to bring this major asset (both transit, tourist, and historic) back online. And I love hearing that the only time PRT's CEO has gotten hate mail (not that anyone should ever get it) was when she speculated about closing down the Incline.

When the US was swept with the new-streetcars-mixed-with-traffic fad in the 00s, Canada didn’t build a single one. They only built rail in exclusive lanes.

I wonder if that’s because most educated Canadians have visited Toronto and experienced its old streetcar lines.

Same in #Edinburgh when a Low Emissions Zone, a tram line was built, 20mph started and a Pavement parking Ban was introduced.

Things got better. The sky didn’t fall in.

It didn’t for the minimum wage or smoking bans either.
ULEZ was nothing short of national hysteria.

I was interviewing people about air pollution at the time and people who were already living in the existing zone were convinced expanding it by a few miles would be end of days.
A perpetual quirk of voter psychology (and one I'm not really sure you can 'solve') is people automatically assuming that all punitive measures will apply to them. See ULEZ in London for another example

It does make pushing through policies harder than it probably should be

One chart I really loved—Canada not only has more transit vehicle miles but they carry more passengers per mile.

Then in the 2000s while the US had to add more service just to keep passengers steady Canada was actually building up per capita ridership & service levels.
