Let this be the inspiration for cities everywhere.

A woman can be seen pushing a child's scooter along a street outside a school building in central Paris, newly lined with trees, greenery and abundant street space for children to play and move safely, which has been reclaimed from vehicles. The key is not to expand the space available to cars—that produces sprawl and unwalkable, unlivable cities.

When you restrict the car space, and prioritize space for more efficient modes—that’s when you discover you have space left over for living.

20 minute neighbourhoods need bus priority measures and a reduction in private cars so buses are much faster and more efficient.

Based on average private car occupancy, there were as many people of the top floor of the bus this photo was taken from as there were in the queue delaying the bus.
Long queue of private cars preventing buses from making progress on Morningside Road - photo from the front of a Lothian Bus. Photo of a lot of private cars on each side of the street and parked shows how much of our public space is devoted to private cars.

The balance:

On one side of the scales: Fewer road deaths, injuries, NHS costs, noise; reduced insurance premiums for 20 mph communities; and better conditions for walking and cycling.

On the other: slightly quicker journeys or getting to the back of the next traffic light queue faster?

So this is what was going on this morning. Union Canal path between Redhall Park turnoff and Kingsknowe Station will be closed each day for the next couple of weeks from 8am - 4.30pm. Cutting back ash trees. Diversion in place. No notice of this in advance 👎🏼 @spokes.org.uk @sw20.info @edi.bike

When telling motorists they can’t pass is so important, you block the only pavement for anyone else who wants to get past too!

The evidence shows this hasn't happened in Leith - overall traffic levels are down across the area, including on all boundary roads except one.

Space for a few cars or several businesses to have seating? Which is better for the economy?
The Shore, Edinburgh. Car parking, not seating, on both sides of a pretty street. South Queensferry. Car parking, not seating, on both sides of a pretty street.
