So much of #Edinburgh’s streetscape has been converted into private car storage.

Without consultation, gradually over time we’ve become numb to ever increasing number and size of private belongings stored in public space.

Cars ≠ thriving streets or successful public space

We need #StreetsNOTroads
I spent most of Tuesday following the "Singing Street" around to take photos of the filming locations. It was very hard not to be struck by streets that were once playgrounds now being car parks. In other places there is still a bustle of life, but it is now tourists playing, not skipping girls

🌤️ Good morning Edinburgh. Surprise! I said the newsletter was on pause this week, but there's so much happening in terms this weekend that I had to put something together. So here's the city's most comprehensive ad-free round-up of weekend events: www.edinburghminute.com/the-edinburg...

Niche, yes. But well researched and highly relevant to #Edinburgh too!

Give Andy’s site a visit: threadinburgh.scot
I know these numbers over 3 years are small beer in terms of the internet, but I'm pretty chuffed about them never-the-less for what is quite niche content

Cracking conclusion:

“Lothian Buses cannot meet this challenge alone…. #Edinburgh would need around 300 more buses to meet peak times, at a capital cost of £150 million and a further £75 million cost in revenue per year. In short, we risk swapping car congestion for bus congestion.”

In 2015, London introduced Quietways and had started its Cycle Super Highway network.

Criticism said London was too cold, had an old streetscape, wasn’t Dutch, the economy would be damaged, it was too hilly and that not everyone could cycle.

Sounds like #Edinburgh now.

Built it. they come.
📣New data shows London cycling is soaring:

📈 12% up from last year to 1,500,000 daily journeys
📈 that's 43% up from 2019

🚲Cycleway Network grows to 431km (up from 90km in 2016)
😎 & 76% of London cyclists feel safe our routes

Cameron Toll would be the ideal transport interchange - a covered, cross platform interchange with high capacity, rapid trams.

Would reduce the number of buses using the key Bridges corridor allowing more space for pedestrians along the line

Good for business too - if integrated with the centre?

Market Street, #Edinburgh.

Without the bollard, what would the result have been on the busy pavement?
We destroy BMWs for fun and will NEVER get bored of it.

Like every city, despite vocal opposition, this multi-year study of an #Edinburgh street and cycling scheme shows massive benefits and increasing public and local business support.

Every city that delivers schemes well helps deliver social and economic benefits.

Walkable with consistent investment in public transport and good street design.

Meanwhile in #Edinburgh… 🚗 🚙 🚘
The throughline I see on the @economist.com’s list of most liveable cities is these are all places with robust transit, walkable and, mostly, bikeable urban environments.

Both Sydney and Melbourne are investing in new Metros, for example.

So much of our infrastructure, planning, environmental, and road safety measures seem to be based around politicians' fear of slightly inconveniencing easily-angered motorists. Pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users are barely considered in their calculations.

In #Edinburgh 40% of households don’t have access to a car at all, yet so much of our public space is devoted to private vehicles.

*All-time record* set at the Omni Centre cycle lane on the 7th November - 2,265 cycle journeys.

I can only speculate that the rollout of Voi e-bikes has significantly boosted cycling in Edinburgh this autumn, bucking the seasonal trend.

#Edinburgh could and should do this too
Looking at how other cities have improved their public spaces shows that #Edinburgh’s streets can also become safer, more welcoming and greener.

Same in #Edinburgh when a Low Emissions Zone, a tram line was built, 20mph started and a Pavement parking Ban was introduced.

Things got better. The sky didn’t fall in.

It didn’t for the minimum wage or smoking bans either.
ULEZ was nothing short of national hysteria.

I was interviewing people about air pollution at the time and people who were already living in the existing zone were convinced expanding it by a few miles would be end of days.
A perpetual quirk of voter psychology (and one I'm not really sure you can 'solve') is people automatically assuming that all punitive measures will apply to them. See ULEZ in London for another example

It does make pushing through policies harder than it probably should be
