Tram Granton to Bioquarter – Spokes early draft response, as of 6 Oct With the consultation now well underway, the Spokes draft response is developing well. You can find it here [1.9MB pdf]. We strongly stress that this is a work in progress and there are likely to be considerable further edits, particularly to the second part of the response, dealing with individual sections of the route. Major updates and ideas in the draft, since our initial thoughts, include.. An introductory section on bikes and tramlines, which includes lessons from our tramline-crash reporting tool and from earlier phases of Edinburgh tram Detailed commentary on all sections of the route [several sections still require considerable fleshing out]. Some major issues/opportunities arising include.. Great concern over cycling safety in the Bridges corridor. We urge single-line working for this section, or possibly the tramlines on one side of the road with bidirectional segregated cycling on the other side We suggest dropping North Bridge tram stop and replacing it by two stops – at Waverley Steps to serve east Princes Street and the rail station, and at the North Bridge arcade, to serve the Old Town and again the rail station. There are multiple reasons for this suggestion, in addition to a major cycling safety aspect There may be an opportunity to incorporate an active travel bridge over the mainline railway, linking the North Edinburgh Network to the new Fountainbridge link, without the long ramps down to road level and up again. Queensferry: Builyeon Road new primary school and improved active travel connections DRAFT Spokes consultation response The page numbers below refer to the document Queensferry Connections DRAFT Developed Designs ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- South Queensferry residents already suffer from the effects of excessive traffic with actual and perceived risk to life, excessive noise, pollution and negative health impacts of increasing levels of inactivity, especially amongst younger generations. With over 1600 properties built or planned to be built in just a few years within the town, Edinburgh Council must act now to make active travel a more attractive option for people to choose to travel to, from and around South Queensferry. Spokes broadly welcome these proposals as we believe this could potentially be the start of what is required to provide adults and children with the opportunity for active travel which for most does not currently exist. There is an opportunity for a wider active travel network throughout South Queensferry and these proposals as the currently stand exclude other areas of South Queensferry, for example other schools around the town. All children and adults should have the right to exercise for free and to travel actively safely and we would urge the Council, the Scottish Government and other funding partners to take a proactive approach to planning this (and other) active travel networks, not just individual routes that are not joined up one of the main proposals maps in the consultation, showing the active travel route beside and crossing a road

Now retired I love exploring the network and its connections to other areas of West Lothian, recording many of my rides on YouTube ( www.youtube.com/@lostinlivi ) in the hope of encouraging others to discover the connections that can be made and the delights to be found.

Open letter Call for all National Governments to Make Walking and Cycling Central to Climate Commitments Ahead of COP30 The Partnership for Active Travel and Health (PATH) are calling on all national governments to join the momentum for integrating walking and cycling into their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in advance of COP30. Enabling more people to walk and cycle safely is increasingly recognised as a quick, reliable and affordable way to cut transport emissions in half by 2030 and help reach the Paris Agreement. PATH research shows that two-thirds of countries now have active travel policies, but current commitments too often fall short of the ambition needed to ensure they address the climate imperative. New policies from countries like Brazil, Cambodia and Lesotho show what’s possible. Their planned actions, come with targets and funding, promising safer, cleaner and more enjoyable walking and cycling experiences. This will both enable the millions of people walking and cycling to avoid the potential emissions that would be generated from alternative choices and encourages existing polluters to shift their habits and benefit from the better conditions. Policymakers are urged to follow PATH’s Active Travel Policy Template (2025) for a comprehensive step-by-step guide to creating an effective policy. The framework contains inspiring examples of the 20 national actions that, when delivered, have a measurable impact. COP30 is a critical opportunity to embed sustainable mobility into global climate action. PATH, and their supporters, urges all national governments to submit ambitious NDCs without further delay. Now is the time to scale up ambition, investments, and embed walking and cycling in climate strategies to reduce pollution, benefit public health and create vibrant, inclusive and equitable societies.

Bike theft in the city is rampant and causing on-demand riders true headaches. When you lose your bike, you can't work and many riders are already in debt for the bikes to begin with.

Will be interesting to see if e-bikes are blamed in this case, tho?

The Highlands has waited long enough. Our only rail link to the Central Belt is still mostly single-track, diesel-powered, and stuck in the past. Meanwhile, the Government is ready to pour billions into roads while breaking its promises on rail.

One of the biggest concerns in the town centre is the existence of a retail park on the outskirts of the town which provides free parking and that shoppers will go there if they have to pay in the town. Now a petition with 3008 signatures has been lodged with the council calling for the Haddington plans to be scrapped. It says: “We the undersigned call on East Lothian Council to scrap the proposed parking management proposals to have parking meters/charges in Haddington town centre. “The attached signatories are happy with the current parking management. Any changes to the current system will have an economic impact on the unique small businesses. “Currently there are no charges at Haddington Retail Park. You would not anticipate them arriving on a bicycle. But Real Betis defender Hector Bellerin is not the archetypal player. He prefers to arrive at the team's base in Seville using more sustainable means than most - riding a bike or taking public transport. "It would be easier to take a cab. I know I'm privileged, but it's more of a revindication. We need greener cities, with fewer cars," Bellerin says. One of the biggest concerns in the town centre is the existence of a retail park on the outskirts of the town which provides free parking and that shoppers will go there if they have to pay in the town. Now a petition with 3008 signatures has been lodged with the council calling for the Haddington plans to be scrapped. It says: “We the undersigned call on East Lothian Council to scrap the proposed parking management proposals to have parking meters/charges in Haddington town centre. “The attached signatories are happy with the current parking management. Any changes to the current system will have an economic impact on the unique small businesses. “Currently there are no charges at Haddington Retail Park.
