🚨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!

ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

Vita Sackville West writes this to Virginia Woolf. ❤️

"I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way."

One of our goals as a newsroom is to make living in the District easier for the residents who call it home.

We want the regular explainers we publish to serve you, so... what do you want explained?

Let us know — and see some examples — here:
Help us explain D.C.
At The 51st, we aim to make living in the District easier for the residents who call it home. To that end, what topic should we explain next?

When Trump dies we get Vance. Thiel’s pet.

They'll blame a lot of stuff on Trump AND try to fast-track an even uglier white supremacist techno-Christofascism.

We must prept for this now & organize accordingly.
Grassroots activism, coalitions. Dissent. Sand in gears. Strikes.

Every angle.

As someone writing on internet 20+ years, most important peice of advice I'd give people is to have clear boundaries from start about what you will & won't write about. I don't write about my spouse or sex (except generally), children I know, or how bad situation is for me until I'm out other side.

We are NOT helpless in the face of this. (And importantly neither were the Jews and queers and Romani of 1930s Germany.) We can and should organize. We should also understand exactly what we are organizing against. They are posting ethnic cleansing memes on their official accounts. BELIEVE. THEM.

Suspect a HUGE issue with "A.i." summary tools is that they're full of mistakes that you'd only know if you already know the material. So people THINK it's helping when it's actually making them more ignorant.
I work mostly in non-profit database management, something AI should aid gracefully, and I genuinely gave LLM AI’s a shot in the first few months of all the hype, and it… can’t do anything. It’s also wrong about the historical topic I studied the most. But AI shills still love to tell me I’m naive…

@tkingfisher.com my 9yo just spent the last 20mins yelling about how she's 9, she shouldn't have to argue with her teachers about 🧊, but since the adults in the building aren't doing it, guess she's gonna.

... Why yes she did read _A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking_ this year, why do you ask?

The National Science Foundation sign on our Eisenhower Av building is now gone.

The NSF mural in the foyer is removed and torn off in sheets.

We were supposed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the agency in May 2025. That never happened.

Following the vandalism of at least 11 government vehicles or rentals driven by federal law enforcement at a hotel in Eagan, Minnesota last night, it's safe to say—you don't want to stay at a hotel that hosts ICE, or even park your vehicle there. You don't want to host them at your hotel, either.

The library ebook business is such a scam. Good to see dem state lawmakers are considering banding together to negotiate fairer deals.
Are you currently 480th in line for an e-book and wondering why @dcpubliclibrary.bsky.social doesn't just ... buy more copies?

The short answer: e-books are incredibly expensive. But D.C. lawmakers have a plan to curb the excessive pricing from publishers, @maustermuhle.bsky.social reports:
Libraries can't afford e-books. D.C. lawmakers have a plan.
The demand and price for e-books is up — and it’s busting the D.C. Public Library budget.
