John Smith and James Pratt were executed for Sodomy, the last 2 people to face this punishment in the UK, although it remained a capital crime until 1861.
James was a stable worker, John a labourer. Despite pleas for mercy, their sentence went ahead.

Notorious, yet discreet, lesbian & sewing machine heiress, Winnaretta Singer dies. She enjoyed a lavender marriage with Prince Edmond de Polignac, with whom she shared a love of music. Before her death, she arranged concerts to raise funds for the red cross.

The Schwules Museum closes an exhibition about Emma Trosse who published groundbreaking work on female homosexuality, asexuality and making the case for LGBTQIA+ equality in the 1890s. Her work should be better known but it was censored and banned.

In 1889, schoolkids in Britain held a nationwide wave of school walkouts, taking to the streets to demand shorter hours, less homework, less corporal punishment and free education.
