Newborns don’t get significant amounts of vitamin K through the placenta, don’t absorb it well through their gut, and there isn’t much in breast milk. For all of humanity until recently babies would die because of this.

Between 2017 and 2024, the percentage of newborns not receiving intramuscular vitamin K for prophylaxis nearly doubled, with refusal rates highest outside hospital births and among certain racial and ethnic groups.
