In fact I think a lot of these conspiracies are driven by a desire for Epstein to have done “worse” things, because sexual abuse of girls and young women is so normalized and prevalent that people don’t view it as bad or strange enough to care. So they hope it’s secretly about eating babies

There’s nothing to conspire about when it comes to sexual abuse, particularly of young women like many of Epstein’s victims were. Nothing happens to perpetrators the overwhelming majority of the time. It’s almost legal in practice

If we are to take Maitlis seriously regarding her apparent confusion and disbelief here, then we must conclude that she is a terrible journalist. To have repeatedly interacted with the man and still genuinely believe he’s an old-fashioned country-first people-serving pol? Dangerously naive.
