“Women aren’t typically this crazy about politics.”
Thanks to Democrats like Ruben "why aren't women hot anymore" Gallego, who voted for the Laken Riley bill, this young woman cannot be released on bail while her appeal is pending. She's in Lumpkin, GA.
Awful. Trump admin is deporting a 23-year-old NC woman who came here at the age of 14 as an unaccompanied minor. Her father was murdered and mother died of cancer. All she has are two traffic citations, per this report from Charlotte Observer's Dan Kane:

Relief washes over me when I see a piece by @melissagiragrant.com bc I know it will be a smart take (tm)
For at least a year, I've been returning to the question, how would you know when it's time to leave the US? For this piece, I asked trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer Americans who, with their families and partners, have recently fled the country, about how they made this decision and how they left.
When Is It Time to Flee?
Trans people and their families are facing hard questions and choices as threats to their safety and rights proliferate.

Dangerous people alert

None of this has ever been about “dangerous people” considering Purdue Pharma killed how many people hmm?
This is the scandal. Trump isn’t targeting dangerous people. He’s targeting peaceful immigrants. Almost exclusively.

From my anecdotal experience, this is absolutely true
Police have access to massive surveillance networks that track the public whether they are suspects or not. That means probably for every 1 officer caught using the system to harass or spy on people they have feuds with, ex's, activists, journalists, there are probably 100 more we don't know about.

On Monday, North Carolina's terrible, draconian law will come into effect. One small piece that has gotten little scrutiny -- judges must consider whether someone has a home when deciding pretrial release.

Thrilled to share that Chris Duncan, whose conviction was vacated in April, was just granted bail today, after spending over 25 years on Louisiana's death row.

It's so rare to get good news when you're covering capital punishment, but this is one very real light in the darkness
In January 2024 I got a one-line email from a woman I didn't know: "Jimmie Duncan an innocent man on death row is looking to get into contact with you."

I've been working on the story ever since. Here it is, finally - a @motherjones.com / @bolts.bsky.social feature: boltsmag.org/the-human-co...

Someone much more centrist than me said, "It's like the Democrats hate the left more than the GOP."
These 20 House Democrats just joined Republicans in voting to fully repeal DC's police reform laws.

Wiping off the books critical laws on use of force, transparency, and preventing violent cops from getting rehired.

They think that they should have more say over DC police than the people of DC.

(This comment is not about the article, which is fine.)
I am perpetually confused why any legal scholar thinks that "state's rights" was anything more than a political stance. The people claiming "federal overreach" always had a very specific political agenda.

Interesting summary of the case against private security in Idaho where the issue appears to be whether or not the sheriff had the authority to order them to arrest people.
No seats left at the criminal hearing for the town hall this morning. The KCRCC showed up for this one.

Today we’ll be hearing a motion to dismiss from the defendants (LEAR security guards). The judge has also handed out jury instructions in the event that the case moves forward. #idpol

Whenever I see local police collaborating with ICE, or taking anti-immigrant stances themselves, I think about this line of argument from Police and the Empire City about how police in the early 1900s celebrated the rise of deportation as a possible solution for solving xenophobic crime panics.

BREAKING: The House of Representatives voted 285–98 in favor of a resolution condemning socialism.

Eighty-six Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the measure, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
