"Since at least 2014 we are watching a coup against democracy unfold. It is the combination of hybrid warfare, rise of the far-right, and tech coup.

How long can Europe hold the line if we don’t take defending our democracy as serious as defending our territory?"

Another outcome for which the Kremlin worked, lest we forget. Described in "Road to Unfreedom."
Still reeling from the Stanford report on Brexit. Reduced GDP by up to 8% and investment by as much as 18%. The UK Treasury would have £40 billion more each year if Britain had remained in the EU. Devastating self-immolation.

I met the artist this morning, who told us that an American lawyer had projected this image on the Russian embassy in Washington DC just a few days ago.

I thought: he must be talking about @benjaminwittes.lawfaremedia.org

And yes, he was!

The image is by Kriss Salmanis, a Latvian artist who created it in the early days of the full-scale invasion. It hangs as a giant banner on a museum across the street from the Russian embassy in Riga, Latvia.

First, they rewired information spaces (exploiting attention dynamics & inherent vulnerabilities of social & digital media). Building upon that advantage, they reconfigured the political systems. Now, they use both to shift values into something that would have been unrecognizable mere months ago.
It's not just that the United States has stopped trying to promote liberal democratic ideas internationally. It's that the United States is actively trying to promote the contrary. It's trying to turn more countries into Hungary.

We still need to get from a situation where Russia pretends to negotiate to a situation where they need to negotiate.

Language matters @politico.eu. They are not US "demands", it is "blackmail". The @ec.europa.eu has no mandate to negotiate away EU legislation, nor the right to soften enforcement. The Commission has to protect European citizens, not US broligarchs.
The EU’s push for the U.S. to scrap its tariffs on steel and aluminum has opened the door to an old demand from Washington: Loosen your digital rulebook, and we’ll meet you halfway.
US demands digital concessions in return for EU steel tariff relief
Washington argues U.S. companies would invest more in the EU if it rolls back its digital rulebook.

Theoloog hier.

Farage can now be easily boxed in to a corner where his only ‘defence’ becomes: “Yes I spouted Kremlin propaganda & Putin worship but, unlike Nathan Gill, I didn’t need bribes to do it.”
It is, once again, a question of whether interviewers have the temerity to shut down his whining obfuscations.

Putin’s real fear isn’t NATO expansion.

Putin’s real fear is DEMOCRACY expansion.

I’ve been in a room with Putin. He calls Ukrainians “Russians with accents.” His real fear isn’t NATO expansion, it’s democracy expansion. It shatters his entire argument for dictatorship at home. Because if Ukrainians embrace freedom, Russians may demand the same.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

To sum up the “peace plan”:

- US + Russia divide frozen Russian assets meant for Ukraine
- Russia evades accountability for war crimes
- Europe stuck with bill for Ukraine reconstruction
- Ukraine kept a half-state that never becomes the Ukraine that is a significant power in Europe, for Europe.
The “peace plan” for Ukraine is just a framework for Russia & the US to take assets away from Ukrainian recovery, and to ensure Russia evades accountability for war crimes

Europe can, and must, craft better with Ukraine

Two European officials said that the frozen assets section of the Ukraine peace agreement was one of the most alarming since it implies authority over assets that are mostly immobilised in European institutions.

One said it was almost as if the text had been drawn up as “a deliberate provocation”.

EU Commission spokesperson on tech. The difficulty here is that the Commission sent X a provisional finding of breach of the Digital Services Act 16 months ago, and has done nothing since. So why take this expression of concern seriously?
Grok’s antisemitic output is appalling.

It goes against Europe’s fundamental rights and values.

The DSA is clear: hate speech has no place online in Europe.

We already took action on GPAI risks, including X’s chatbot in March.

We are in touch with X: the company must act on its chatbots risks.
