I had a terrific conversation with Khun Pitchaya Sudbanthad at #swf. Thanks Melissa de Silva for your warm & thoughtful moderation. It was good to have such an engaged & passionate audience too. Dark times but hope in down to earth community & connection.

News Corp asks why all writers & other artists are endorsing any & all of Randa Abdel-Fattah's views. That's not it. Writers & other artists are standing by a principle: oppose political pressure to silence any artist because they are First Nations, Palestinian, Jewish, or anything else.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

Her mother called 911 for help… and got turned into ICE instead.

They placed her and her five year old daughter in a hotel and told them not to contact anyone.

ICE didn’t want the community fighting for them.

Mother & daughter have been deported to Honduras and the local police were complicit.

My state is now the only state in Australia without a funded writers support organisation.

Once you destroy arts industry infrastructure, it can take YEARS to restore the foundational support artists need.

What a ridiculous awful mess of a thing to have its curatorial decisions overruled by a board with nobody on it who’s involved in books or the arts in any way, half of whom then immediately quit

As a teenager in Adelaide I was so used to the idea that every year there would be a free outdoor week of writers talking that you could just pop along to without planning anything in advance; I didn’t realise how exceptional that was, how unlike almost every writers festival.

Instead of posting on social media, use your power, use your voice as an Australian citizen

If the pro-Israel lobby can get organised and complain and write letters, then so can you

Write to anyone & everyone at the Adelaide Festival and voice your complaint

And - get everyone else involved too

A letter from Henry Reynold's lawyer. Of course an academic who wrote first (?) books about Australia's genocide/s of First Nations peoples, at a time when speaking up was even dangerous for white people's careers, is standing in solidarity with Randa. (Apologies for no ALT)

It needs to be said: this is a catastrophic act of vandalism. Adelaide Writers Week is free to access and open to everyone. I have participated in three. People might dunk on its greying audience but its existence is a statement of values. Like libraries. Don Dunstan would weep for his children.
I have been sent a copy of Adelaide Festival's response to the letter raising concerns about Thomas Friedman's participating in Adelaide Writers Week.

The response says that Friedman could not participate due to "last minute scheduling issues".

When this blows over I might have to share some of the emails I’ve received over the days which really make me wonder why I am the one accused of hatred. There is deep unresolved trauma being spewed by some of these people and we cannot consent to living according to their warped reality.

The Trump admin is demanding universities institute anti-mask laws for student protesters, holding the schools’ funding as a ransom, while sending secret police in balaclavas to disappear immigrants
Men in plainclothes, one in a balaclava, raided the Charlottesville courthouse today. They abducted a local painter whose case (allegedly fighting with his roommate) was being dismissed, and another who was there paying fines. They took them away in unmarked vans.

UPDATE: ICE is wildly unconcerned about where this man is and no one will tell me, his registered attorney. The universal answer so far is "let's wait and see where he ends up." This is deeply off.

We would have more rights at this point if UPS had lost a pair of shoes I'd just bought from Zappos
My detained client was scheduled for a bond hearing this AM in a MA immigration court. He wasn't brought in, and he and his case have disappeared.

I then received this notice of activity on a nonexistent docket in which his name was changed to "N/A"

It's all happening a lot faster than I expected

Water is becoming a major issue in the Southern California fires.

As crews battled the wildfire in Pacific Palisades, they put so much strain on the water system that the fire hydrants ran dry.

The fires have also fed ash into the water supply, leading to a boil order notice.
