The thing is, in 1999 I was laser-focused on how much further we still had to go to make the modern world something to be proud of. I had no idea we were about to do a giant pratfall and slide halfway down the mountain.
Very tired of having to explain to people old enough to know better that it has NOT, in fact, always been true that we allow technology to get ever more dangerous and damaging as it ‘advances’. Please stop memory-holing the entire 20th century

Putin has been very consistent throughout the war: Ukraine belongs to him, the Ukrainians don't get a say in that, and the only peace Russia is open to is that of Ukraine's forced surrender and Russia's successful conquest.
Only outsiders are pretending otherwise, which makes themselves feel better.
"President Vladimir Putin has doubled down on his core demands for ending the war in Ukraine, stating that Russia will lay down arms only if Kyiv's troops withdraw from territory claimed by Moscow."

I'm seeing claims that progress was made at #COP30, but it really wasn't. Each passing year with no fossil fuel phaseout comes at great opportunity cost as we further burn through the vanishing carbon budget that remains for averting dangerous warming. See my commentary: michaelmann.net/bad-cop/

For a decade, Russia has been seeking to divide Europe and America, to undermine NATO and weaken the transatlantic alliance. This peace plan, if accepted, will achieve that goal.

Very disappointed none of you told me that Lewis Mumford made a 1963 film about car dependency, and it's available on YouTube.

"The motor car inflates our private ego, proclaims our social status, and provides us with the illusion of freedom and power."

Concur.

Police in a healthy society/polity are not a military/paramilitary force. They are a branch of the civil power, and their authority ultimately rests (or should) on the consent of the governed/policed.

When the police become occupiers, nothing good happens.
I simply refuse to accept that police ever have to look like this. this is just pure cosplay. it should be illegal for cops to be dressed like soldiers going to war.
