If you're seeing encouragement/demands to do alt text and you're overwhelmed or confused about how to do it and you're worried you're going to do it wrong...

this thread is for you.

First: prompt questions to get you started.
Alt text prompt Qs:

What would someone who can't see the image need to know about it in order to take part in the conversation? What is it about this image that made you choose it? What are the important details someone who could see the image would take away from it?

(Not for images of text.)

For Halloween, I wrote romance while watching horror. For Thanksgiving, I am writing horror while watching Pride and Prejudice.

Mixed signals. That's the way I roll.

Have any news outlets that ran scathing front page headlines, op-eds and editorials about Biden pardoning Hunter admitted that they were wrong after we've seen Trump maliciously prosecute Comey, James, McIver etc?

The convo about money and what someone's situation looks like from the outside is so important. As a single, full-time freelancer, my financial situation in a cost of living crisis is not great. I am honest about that; the constant grind is taxing and people should know what they might be facing.
If you have ever thought that my journalism or my first book were net positives for the world, understand that they probably would not exist if I did not have a spouse who paid the mortgage. If I'd been a solo earner/parent, I likely would have left criticism, journalism or book writing long ago.
And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.

The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.

Reposting for reach. What are the best books on the topic?

I read a lot of primary sources, which is not time efficient, and which exposes me to a lot of horrible things that I can't unread. Do not recommend. What's a better way to read this stuff?
This whole thread was interesting! Are there any books or other places you'd suggest I look to learn more about it?

My food discourse take is that there will inevitably be somebody who is invested in those opinions but is ignorant around EDs, disability and access, food deserts, allergens, or autistic sensory needs…

And basically gets shirty with folks for describing their material realities.
My actual food discourse take is that the problem with low stakes Internet discourse like the food stuff isn’t the people with opinions, it’s the people who act like you kicked their dog if you say you don’t like something they do. Learn how to not take other people’s opinions personally.
my take on Food Discourse is that it's always ridiculous but it's also nice to be fighting about dumb internet shit again instead of dealing with Oppressive Despair all the time so please keep posting your bad takes

So much of Thanksgiving happens long before any of us sit down at the table. Long before the turkey hits the oven or the pie is sliced, immigrant farmworkers and meatpacking workers have already put in the labor that makes these traditions possible.

Some of the greatest hits by the Utah GOP, all in one article:

1. Baseless fearmongering about Utah turning into California
2. A disdain for voters being able to choose for themselves.

Yeah but the president is white.
A mayoral candidate saying maybe the city should cover the cost of bus rides gets the full socialism panic treatment before he even tries it.

A sitting president taking billions of dollars worth of shares in private companies gets “I must say, a tad unusual” after it’s been going for nearly a year.

“Illegal Immigrants” is by far the best selling slogan of all time.

Sold, to the suckers and losers at the high price of American unity.

Brought to you by every single rich MF, hysterically laughing all the way to the bank.

At you.

You easily manipulated schmuck.

What hardly anyone knows: they can poison the water that remains.

-the best turkey is not as good as the worst ham
-not liking pumpkin pie is anti-indigenous
-the walmart patti labelle sweet potato pie is way better than it deserves to be
- mac and cheese should be made from a roux

This. Plenty of people would prefer that women be our only social safety net.
Look, women no longer do shit for free is actually at the root of a lot of social disruption. The question is whether you think the solution is women going back to being unpaid and unprotected by their own labor.
