Unsolicited writing advice, no. 1836:
Don't write the book you think 'people will buy'. No one knows for sure what people will buy, incuding the people who sell books. Instead, write the book you need to write. The book that makes a difference.

People in AI often justify the exploitation of creatives' work for AI training with versions of: 'If people can learn from your work, why can't AI?'

But this totally ignores the social contract under which people create and share their work.

Unlike most apps these days, Scrivener does not use AI in any way. However, if you’re on a Mac, you may see an AI prompt.

“While the AI industry claims its models can “think,” “reason,” and “learn,” their supposed achievements rest on marketing hype and stolen intellectual labor. In reality, AI erodes academic freedom, weakens critical reading, and subordinates the pursuit of knowledge to corporate interests.”
AI Is Hollowing Out Higher Education
Olivia Guest & Iris van Rooij urge teachers and scholars to reject tools that commodify learning, deskill students, and promote illiteracy.

I know this sentiment has been expressed before, but there's nothing like reading the emails of the ultra rich to make you understand why they think they need a chatbot to do their writing.

The LLM thing is remarkable because if anyone was like "I never went to medical school anyway here's my magic anti disease device pls give 100 billion" they'd be laughed out the room or beaten with sticks but we're supposed to let guys who never read a book hand us an app claiming it'll write them

I cannot tell you how many tech journalists at prominent media organizations do not understand this
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro says 'I'd rather die' than use generative AI
Del Toro's new Frankenstein adaption reimagines Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel. Frankenstein was like a tech bro: "creating something without considering the consequences," he explains.
