I am beginning to develop a suspicion of national decline based in elevating STEM nerds to dangerously high social positions, because their tendency to believe that "anything that cannot be properly measured should not be argued for" is being more revealed by the day as an inherently reactionary one

NIST's time services going down is less about "oh no things are going to break" (we are very resilient to muti-second drift even if people didn't have backups like GPS) and more about "oh no this is a crucial service we are being reminded has multiple underfunded and vulnerable chokepoints"

Neither Shaun Maguire, nor Sequoia, responded to interview requests for this story. Natalie Miyake, Sequoia Capital’s communications partner, was not available when Fast Company called the firm’s offices.
Sequoia's Shaun Maguire accused an innocent Palestinian of being the Brown shooter. Then he doubled down.
Online sleuthing is not, it turns out, among the noted VC's talents.

Matty Y sent out a bat signal to the group chats
This is why I'm really starting to hate the data bros.

Matty Y: "Dems should focus less on climate change/renewable energy, it's a losing issue."

Sean Casten (an actual Congressman): "I won a purple district multiple times by focusing on those issues"

Lakshya: "YEAH BUT YOU DIDN'T OVERPERFORM"

My big problem with the Avatar franchise is how unrealistic its depictions of human soldiers vs. scientists are. The grunts (ex-Jake) are all portrayed as gung-ho killing machines and the scientists are all a bunch of hippy peaceniks who instantly defect to the Na’vi.

This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

For folks curious re the news re gender affirming care for trans youth I wrote a quick summary in the BDNH newsletter

It’s NOT a national ban.

it creates no new civil or criminal penalties, it is a proposal to wield the power of the purse to discriminatorily deny care

This guys company just raised $20m. They want to pay spacex to put thousands of large mirrors in low earth orbit and then charge people for directed sunlight (it will have no negative environmental consequences because it only goes where directed, no gyroscope among thousands will ever fuck up).
this is the funniest fucking part i've ever seen in my LIFE

I think its understandable that people are wishcasting an AI bubble because it's truly over for democracy if some people in SV don't get gigarekt off what they've done. But the more realistic way to accomplish that is some prompt legislative/regulatory action.
December 20, 2025 at 8:02 AM
I want scorched earth revenge on everyone trying to take my hormones away, all their allies, everyone who funds/abets them or even just glazes them. That's like 3/4 of SV. I hope they lose a lot of money even if it sets technological progress back a few years or something.
I think there’s some unproductive AI-Luddism (colloquial usage, you know what I mean, don’t be annoying), but also it’s extremely obvious where it came from and AI companies share a large portion of the blame with how they’ve framed things.

a sequel:

cis people on the skyline are genuinely more distressed by the trump-kennedy center than the fact that congress said a second time in 2 days, “no, really this kind of child’s healthcare should be banned & criminalized” & 46/47 non-GOP senators won’t commit to “i will oppose this.”

For years, Republicans have hidden behind an air of concern when it comes to trans rights. They said they were worried about trans women harming other women in the bathroom. But now, for @ryanlcooper.com, the lies have stopped and the transphobia is out in the open.

The Transphobic Mask Is Off - The American Prospect
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene drew up a bill making it a federal felony to provide pediatric transition care of any kind. The ultimate goal is a ban on all trans health care and the end of civil rights for trans people.

Can’t stop thinking about this. The Trump administration is essentially extorting hospitals into dropping gender-affirming care—without Medicare or Medicaid they’d go bankrupt. It’s akin to a backdoor ban even for people with private insurance, a proposal that wouldn’t pass Congress.
Under the proposed rule issued by the Trump Administration today, any Medicare- or Medicaid-participating hospital would be barred from providing gender-affirming care to *any child*, even if the care is not paid for by Medicare or Medicaid.

All the anti-trans stuff this week (really, this whole year and the past several leading up to it — but especially this week) has taken a real toll on me.

I feel so sad, scared, and angry. I feel like I don't belong in this world, and that really sucks.
