Media release from NZ Green Party and Marama Davidson: Our trans whanau deserve better than this Government Following last week's political posturing from Christopher Luxon's Government, the Greens promise to do everything in their power to ensure everyone gets the healthcare they need, and that needs to include our trans whanau. "Trans rights are human rights and our trans whanau deserve access to critical healthcare," says Green Party Co-leader, Marama Davidson. "Aotearoa can be a country that leads with compassion, evidence and aroha. But right now, the Government is fanning the flames of an imported culture war by targeting trans and takatapui New Zealanders instead of addressing the issues impacting all of us in a cost-of-living crisis. "They are lauding a UK-style approach which shows disregard for international expert consensus, and has been criticised in the peer-reviewed literature. "Puberty blockers are healthcare, and gender affirming care for trans young people is recognised as best practice. The Government has continued to allow their use for other conditions, so it's clear this move is politically motivated, not scientific. "As we have heard again and again, limiting access to gender-affirming care risks undermining the well-being of trans and non-binary youth, whose voices and experiences have been clear: gender affirming care saves lives. «We have heard the voices of trans people feeling attacked from every direction. Once again, Luxon's Government has espoused some incredibly transphobic rhetoric that aims to cause harm and division. We need to do better for our young people. Centrist waffle doesn't appeal to people. Showing that you care about something, that you want to make people's lives better, that you will listen to them and use your position to do it, and unifying "minor" issues under a coherent story about your principles and goals REALLY APPEALS TO PEOPLE

Labour is now the only Opposition party who has not put out an official press release denouncing the NZ government’s restrictions to healthcare access for trans youth and affirming their strong support for the trans, takatāpui and rainbow communities.

today the NZ climate minister implied because we signed up to transition away from fossil fuel agreement back in 2023 we didn’t need to join the 83 countries including the UK, Ireland, and the Pacific wanting to put this into action at cop 30 -leaving NZ on the side of oil states blocking action

Putting emphasis on this bit as Stanford et al should REALLY think about what they're doing, and what that means for *society as a whole* going fwd.

They are dragging us ALL down, undoing decades of hard progress thanks to narrow-minded Ministers and their often v personal, v petty hangups.
Excerpt from Dr Rebekah Graham (Dr Bex) Substack Post: "Giving effect to Te Tiriti in education Reflecting on the past 20 years - and the changes the 2020 legislation made" It reads as follows: "It is hard to measure, some of the changes I’ve reflected on in this post. Amorphous feelings about belonging are notoriously difficult to pin down. It can feel like a long bow, drawing inferences from te reo pronunciation to teacher training to academic outcomes. Nonetheless, we know that building cultural competency in teaching practice results in better long-term outcomes for all learners. This link is not immediately direct or causal or individual, but rather is seen across cohorts and over years. A narrow focus on quantifiably provable individual educational achievement fails to recognise or even acknowledge that outcomes includes more than scores on tests."

Great to see this from individual MPs but when it’s not coming from the top, and there’s no official statement or press release on Labour’s website, this doesn’t bode well for a future where, following this trial balloon focusing on trans youth, further restrictions to healthcare are very likely.

Doctors and parents should make decisions about what is best for their kids health - not politicians. The Government has said doctors cannot give new prescriptions of puberty blockers to children who are suffering from gender dysphoria. That is putting kids at risk.

Maybe it would have been easier to get “back on track” if they’d started by “fixing the basics” first - like learning how a government works, the impacts it has on day to day lives of non millionaires and actually doing what you campaigned on 🤷🏼‍♂️
