It’s really funny how a generation will roll its eyes at parents who watch Fox News but doesn’t see why being immersed in Twitter is having the same effect. Lots of serious people show up on Fox News too but that shouldn’t be your primary source on the news.

Australian politics has never known a person more dedicated to the hard work of creating movements and parties that are utterly irrelevant.
It is an extraordinary, if pointless, achievement.
Vern Hughes is on the loose again with yet more "mainstream centrist" (actually neither) nonsense recycled from "Democracy First" which appeared as part of FUSION at the federal election. Nobody can count how many "parties" he has promoted. His latest one is called "Victorians" victorians.org.au

Scoop: The most popular apps in Australia right now are social media platforms not included in the teen ban (so far).

This comes as teens make videos recommending that they all migrate to these alternative platforms to get around the ban — something experts warned about.

Holy fucking shit this is a *real* image from a *real* (presumably peer-reviewed) paper in [Nature] Scientific Reports.

How many people had to sign off on this figure?

The editor, one hopes, the reviewer(s)? The copy editor?

What had to happen for THIS to get published?
Hey @nature.com, have you got an explanation for how the hell THIS happened? & especially why you accepted a paper with such a bizarre piece of genAI slop in it?!
& more to the point, why we should take you seriously at all going forward?

Another thing: if we've only managed to cut real emissions by 4% since 2005, how do you think we're getting the rest of the way to 62-70% by 2035 with the same weak policies?
The land-use accounting tricks that got us to -28% aren't yielding any more.
Just to cut through the backslapping: the very small emissions reduction (2%) is nowhere near enough even for our own local targets. These are also the easiest cuts (ie from local pwr generation bc we are buying solar panels) and are only in one sector.
Exported emissions are 4x bigger and growing.

The EPBC Act changes are nowhere near perfect, but there have been some important improvements to the pretty shite original bill.

Good on the govt for negotiating with the Greens to deliver something not completely shit.

Maybe think on doing a bit more of that?

Adani have formally dropped their 5 1/2 year SLAPP court action against Ben Pennings.

To end the case, Ben proposed a very minor restriction to his political freedom.

Add this to the CSIRO cuts and uni cuts generally and the picture is unmistakable
The success rate for NHMRC Ideas Grants announced yesterday was just over 8%. That means 11 of every 12 people who applied got rejected. This is a culture changing level of rejection and frankly a point of national shame. This is a crisis for research.
I will not rest until we see this resolved.

Highest levels of outright science denial since 2009. Highest level of 'gov't is doing too much' (!!!)

And more people afraid of 'self aware AI' than climate.

What a nightmare set of results

Their denial of the body as merely a vessel for code is shown daily by the way these men treat actual living human beings, including the ones who work for their companies.

These men are chasing their own personal immortailty over piles of corpses. They're the closest thing we have to vampires tbh.

The Singularitarian fantasists who want us to elevate machines to consciousness are not interested in the happiness of all beings.

They want to degrade the biological body to a mere vessel, one they can discard. It's bunk theology for men who believe they're too smart and special to die.

The desire to treat AI as having a soul is based on the same pathological terror at their own mortality that drives these same men to invest in life extension foundations.

If the AI has a soul, then consciousness is code and their own consciousness can be uploaded and thus they can live forever.
