I hadn't heard this shit until now and finding out Platner was all in on "black people don't tip" makes way too much sense. And it's a huge red flag for anyone who works in hospitality because it's not true. Everyone who's worked behind the stick knows who undertips and it's not the black community

He's not even bothering to pretend anymore.

Journalistic truth and literary (or moral, or religious) truth are different aims, achieved through different means. Muddying that up on a subject matter that is already beset by propagandists attempting to undermine empirical realities with their own version of truth seems beyond misguided.

This is a deeply confused justification that is basically incoherent. “I care about truth, not persuasion, but if I persuaded one person to do what I think is correct then my packaging of fiction as truth was justified” is not a good argument.
Bruenig gave an interview defending the choice and says what's already clear from the text.

I have a feeling, though, that presenting these medical facts as part of a fictional scenario vastly dilutes its impact. If it's made up, would anyone change their minds?

Oooh I'm not sure about this, a lot of the woo types are now eating up the RFK PROTEIN! SEED OILS! NO VAX! nonsense without being really in any way Christian right-wingers
These details (made up by Bruenig) imply that the parents here are woo-woo Marianne Williamson types, but that breed of anti-vaxxer has become increasingly rare since COVID.

The modal anti-vaxx parent these days is a hardcore Christian right-winger.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

The real question that needs to be answered is why is FEMA under the DHS umbrella in the first place? For DHS to sweep their funds at the end of each fiscal year? There are other Depts. where FEMA could go- Commerce? Interior? Others?

Folks have noted that shutting down DHS also means shutting down FEMA. But it's important to remember that Trump already has been fighting to deny $233 million in FEMA funding to blue states. www.ksbw.com/article/judg...

A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration must restore $233 million in disaster funding to at least a dozen states. The funding was previously slashed over so-called "sanctuary" immigrat...

It’s not lost on me Silver wanta the viewer to have a “personalized” telecast but then stopped letting local broadcasters do playoff games starting this season and most people hate it alongside the Amazon move

I don't want "hyper-personalized telecasts." I wanna be able to watch any sports, including womens and minor league, without having to shell out a shit ton for ESPN+. I want sports back on basic tv, or cable at the most.

This is what ICE does every day. Hunt little kids who are here legally. They get sent to a place called the “baby jail” in Texas. Very little of it ends up on video like this. But it’s routine. And disgusting.

They’ve been locked up for 130+ days.

I spent hours with them on Zoom this week, and their story deserves to be heard.

A Russian couple and their children sought asylum in the U.S. In a Texas detention center, they say they endured worms in the food and hourslong waits for medicine.
