The experience of modernity is basically seeing the world get constantly worse and being told by people in power they can't do anything about it and that you're a bitch for wanting them to try.

much of the work on AI-generated misinformation focuses on regular users/communities, while ignoring how political and economic elites can seal themselves into a hermetic slop box -- a repeat of the same mistake we made with radicalization and conspiracism in the previous decade
oh this is absolutely what i think. i think they feed him fake polls and outright AI slop
At this point, I wonder if he isn't lying when he says he has "my highest Poll Numbers, ever" since it's entirely possible that's what his aides are telling him. It's quite likely that there's an entire Potemkin village built around Trump right now.

This conundrum comes like a week after "only babies question the value of NATO, why are you showing me a photo of trump?"

When the system collapses, what you (belligerently) call political common sense will evaporate.
We're at a point where reducing prosecutions and incarceration isn't a principled leftist stance, it's the only pragmatic way to keep the system functioning at all. This is an unpalatable reality for carceral ideologues so they have to grope around for magical fixes.
this ongoing crisis of the carceral state is such an infuriatingly blatant opportunity for a public conversation that the carceral state absolutely cannot permit to happen

This is classic Britain shit. If you want to do something and it pols well, that's the end of the argument. If it doesn't poll well though, just do it anyway and find another excuse. It's pure manipulation.
With Rachel Reeves reportedly set to apply a new tax on tuition fees paid by overseas students, most Britons support such a move at the previously mooted level of 6%

Support: 57%
Oppose: 18%

What... are they gonna ask?
"Did you say they should not follow illegal orders?"
"Yep, it's right there on video"
MS NOW confirms: The FBI is working with Capitol Police to schedule interviews with the six Democratic lawmakers who urged service members to refuse to comply with illegal orders.

What Kelly said is completely uncontroversial, the point of illegal orders is precisely that it is illegal for you to obey them. You will go to jail if you do.

As for arresting him, well like, go for it big man.
REALITY: The last paragraph essentially acknowledges that everything above it is all bullshit spouted from their make-believe "War" department account. (Despite still including more bullshit about a "presumption" of lawfulness.)

We've had 24 hour news for nearly 40 years now, and during that time news stories do stick around if the press keep banging on about them. Things that don't stick tend to be stuff where right wing politicians/the wealthy are on the hook.
It’s a sign of how insane the news cycle is these days that this historic failure of government policy got just one day of news coverage this week.

Not saying that’s right or wrong, but it’s astonishing how quickly the agenda moves on these days.
BREAKING: UK’s response to Covid was “too little too late”. Acting faster could have saved 23,000 lives in England according to the public inquiry.

Boris Johnson presided over a “toxic, sexist, chaotic culture” in No10, where rule-breaking seriously undermined public confidence.

Reeves was going to raise income tax but since the forecast is a bit better she won’t. Instead she’ll just do a bunch of tweaks and freezes that will annoy everyone and not leave her enough headroom to avoid the same thing next year. 1/2

Just seen another 'but you don't get it! Raising income tax would be unpopular!' It certainly would.

I just am asking anyone who posts that to look at the currently planning departmental spending allocations going into 2028-9 and to explain why they think the *current* plans will be popular:

It was crystal clear that Mel was an absolutely deranged fascist crackpot ten years ago, fifteen, and you’ll notice it has barely hindered her career, not even when the Oslo killer cited her in his crazy manifesto. Quite the opposite, if anything.
Remember when it was revealed that Israel's internal analysis concluded that the only way to reverse the disastrous plunge in Israel's standing was to fuel Islamophobia and portray Israel as the defender of the "West"?

Well, here you have it. Melanie Phillips' speech in NY.

It's sort of funny how allowing the US tech industry to become so politically powerful has kind of done to it all the things that make armies that are too politically powerful very ineffective armies.

(also of course it makes it harder to take this policy seriously when it is the only thing the government claims to be doing against racism; you can't say "for this reason we must cut migration" while not regulating Twitter)

EHRC representative, brightly: “No!”
the ehrc leaked the draft guidance

answers "what if a business doesn't have space to create gender neutral toilets?"

then trans people just can't use the toilet there
