There is zero political will in Calgary to do anything about the never ending bloodbath on our roads.

So sad. So senseless. And zero interest from leadership to stop it.

Was going to entertain Stanley Park MUP for a less car-centric ride bike home, but if this is what 42 Ave MUP looks like, don’t quite see the point.

Textbook example of the city creating amenities and not budgeting for maintenance #yycbike

Morning #yycbike update: Bow north was cleared from George King bridge east around the zoo now. Section from the bridge to Bridgeland station was pure ice, use lots of caution. Plenty of bumpy hard bits all over this morning. Some side streets are nice hard pack.
Afternoon update #yycbike: Fox hollow hill and Nose creek cleared to Memorial. Bow north around the zoo and west to East Village not cleared (grrr). I wonder if we need to 311 it since this section was closed due to construction for over a year? Riverwalk and Eau Claire cleared.
#yycbike report (0530): Eau Claire, Riverwalk, Bow north and Nose Creek MUP all ~3cm snow covered. East Village had sweeper crews out already. Snow is light and easy to ride through.

Good reminder to all #yycbike folk, stay alert at all intersections. I spend more time on the sidewalks / out of the way. Sit back, watch the fireworks then proceed through the collision scene. The red light running will only get worse through the winter.

David wins.

"Between midnight and midnight, Calgary police responded to 496 crashes" ~ CTV News

In all seriousness, this is really really shocking. 500 collisions in one day must be some kind of record. #roadsafety
Somebody should have told this driver not to cork the train ... Ha ha @criticalmassyyc.bsky.social Spun the SUV right around, luckily there was nothing to squish into or it would have been a lot worse. It was some sweet chaos downtown #yyc today.

Lots of ice patches. Silver Springs blvd, bowmont, bowness road, bow pathways all cleared! (B. Road connector, pumphouse to 12th ave not cleared)
Much lumpier around downtown.
Not the shitshow I expected. Still use caution, studs v. recommended!

Ultimately this is a regulatory problem that serious people in transport department offices dismissed because bikes are thought of as a child’s toy, a rich man’s hobby, or a poor man’s last resort. (Gender deliberate, bc women don’t ride bikes). What other problemAtIc unreguted tech is out there?
CPSC urges consumers to immediately remove the battery from the e-bike and dispose of the battery following local hazardous waste disposal procedures. Do not sell or give away these hazardous batteries.

it's notable that this is not a new development, and many bike shops will refuse to service rad power or other budget brand electric bikes because they have a much higher rate of issues that can lead to sudden thermal events or battery fires

Ouch.
Not sure that'll buff out...
The importer, Rad Power Bikes Inc., of Seattle, Washington has refused to agree to an acceptable recall. Given its financial situation, Rad Power Bikes has indicated to CPSC that it is unable to offer replacement batteries or refunds to all consumers.

This is the actual pull yourself up by your bootstraps, can-do attitude that we need more of. Well done!
#yycbike report: typical Calgary dry, fluffy fun stuff. Even if you don't have your winter tires on, it's quite fun. Recommend avoiding the car today cuz driving in this looks like my nightmare.

People talk about throttle on e-bikes like you’d reasonably be able to comfortably hold it the whole time without pedaling, but even if you could - is the alternative keeping people in SUVs going 45 mph?
