My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse

This morning marked a milestone.

It was my 365th day of my “365 days of Sun Project.”

Over the next couple months, I’ll be poring over the thousands of exposures I made and figuring out how to share the thing fully.

So, if anyone knows any gallery or publishing folks, hmu?

Get outside.

In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/

The question isn’t "why does Signal use AWS?" It’s to look at the infrastructural requirements of any global, real-time, mass comms platform and ask how it is that we got to a place where there’s no realistic alternative to AWS and the other hyperscalers. 3/

‘Screensavers’ is so apt because all ai art/text/music does is occupy space.

And we tricked ourselves into thinking all space should be occupied. We don’t need background music in a store. Your blog post is fine without an image too. A news item of one human sentence is better than ai paragraphs.

It's kinda cool that Gary Larson is doing new cartoons because he picked up a digital tablet, taught himself how to use it, and it made him love drawing again.

Award-winning pain researcher here. This is not something that can be done. Hope this helps.
“In nursing homes, neonatal units, and ICU wards, researchers are racing to turn pain—medicine’s most subjective vital sign—into something a camera or sensor can score as reliably as blood pressure.”

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important
⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.
