Wrote about that viral blog which claimed that the poverty line for a family of 4 is $140,000, a ridiculous number buttressed by a lot of good arguments. www.jezebel.com/consumer-sen...
The True Poverty Line Is not $140,000, But It’s Still Shockingly High
A semi-viral post claiming the poverty line is $140,000 may be BS, but the precariousness Americans feel in everyday life is very real.

While there are often some ethical issues with making free PDFs of paywalled content, in this case it seems entirely justifiable, given the author, the subject, and the journalistic imperative to provide the widest possible audience for the verb "Michael Wolffed"

Last week a judge ruled the deployment of National Guard in DC illegal. In the order, the judge noted the substantial risk that the deployment “is going to lead to a dangerous or deadly encounter that could be catastrophic for public safety.”

If you really wanted to get this country back on its feet again you would delete all student loans and call them grants (as they should have been) so as to free the young earners of that millstone of stupid debt that should never have been hung round them.
Private debt is a drain on the economy.

The group of USians who also refer to themselves as 1/78th Irish or whatever don't get to complain about the term USian.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is increasingly likely to be regarded as an unworldly weirdo for objecting to casual use of AI
Seeing a fair few academics saying things like ‘sure I know AI is terrible and the people who designed it are terrible and the impact it has on the planet is terrible…but how might *I* be able to use it in a non-terrible way?’

Healthy masculinity is being able to say "that doesn't bother me so it's none of my business."
from this definition, i think you can derive what behavior is exhibited in a healthy masculine person. like refusing to shame others for any of their choices or characteristics, because to do so would be a projection of insecurity inherited from what was indoctrinated in oneself.

This is stunning -- an absolute must-read: "if you measured income inadequacy today the way [it was] measured it in 1963, the threshold for a family of four wouldn’t be $31,200.

It would be somewhere between $130,000 and $150,000.

Today, in Utah, homeowners *or renters* can simply buy a solar panel at Costco, take it home, and plug it in to a wall socket, like an appliance. It just sits there & trims about 15-20% off a residential power bill. If you move to another apt., you can take it with you.

Honestly you're not a real Marxist and are just an unserious Puritan if you think that it's revolutionary to ask people to work for you for free in a system where that "for free" doesn't come with a UBI or free food, housing, and healthcare for the worker

The problem with ICE is not that it's targeting people who aren't criminals. The problem with ICE is that it's an unaccountable secret deportation police. It cannot be reformed under a better president. It can be made less terrible, but the instrument of repression remains for the next tyrant.

AI is a very general term, you have to be more specific. Do you mean the AI that stole my copyright, the chatbot causing teen suicide and psychosis, the deepfake porn of women without their consent, the bots driving political division or the ones polluting communities and driving electric bills up?

i think tech and ai positive people are going to be in for a big shock when anti tech and anti ai sentiment becomes a major part of leftwing politics going forward especially as datacenters continue to destroy communities and raise electricity bills
Is this platform still massively against AI or has it moved more towards acceptance?
