Still full of cold bleurgh but just about well enough to don the frock and get a later train to London for tonight's talk. Who's in?

I feel this too
You know what we won't need once handwriting recognition software has done its thing? Archivists, curators, conservators, catalogers, codicologists, or paleographers. We won't need archives either. We won't need diplomatics, editorial theory, book or media history, or material culture studies 🗃️🧵

JIM 🐈 🥰
Jim needs to be immortalised in his own children's book. and possibly a major motion picture. I have offered to represent him, and to negotiate a really spectacular deal.
THREAD.

3 years ago, with no warning, a brilliant orange farm cat wandered over from the draughty barn where he had been living, in rural Cornwall, and decided he wanted to live with us instead.

We decided to call him Jim.

This is the first photo I took of him, on that night: December 1st, 2022.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is increasingly likely to be regarded as an unworldly weirdo for objecting to casual use of AI
Seeing a fair few academics saying things like ‘sure I know AI is terrible and the people who designed it are terrible and the impact it has on the planet is terrible…but how might *I* be able to use it in a non-terrible way?’

Look look! SpaceHive knocked the £1.4k contingency fund off, some holy angel sent from God called Stephen Longstaffe dropped 350 quid on us and we are THERE. I promise, this film is going to be epic. Thank you everyone, come on ANGELINE, you stroppy Edwardian MINX!

It was a complete joy to work with my friend Andy on our special issue of @thelondonjournal.bsky.social in 2022, and I am very proud of the introductory essay we co-authored: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

These students are so lucky to have such a kind, thoughtful, and rigorous tutor
Well worth a read. It’s so sad what AI is doing to students’ ability to think for themselves👇
To “my students and to anyone who might listen, I say: Don’t surrender to AI your ability to read, write and think when others once risked their lives and died for the freedom to do so.”
