Indigenous art and culture are not only surviving, they’re thriving. But sustaining that future requires support. Acknowledging Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Indigenous survivance is a start, but there’s a critical need to turn recognition into tangible action.

Husbands just told me he's been brushing his teeth in the shower for past few months as new routine. When a toothbrush appeared on the shower shelf a few months ago I thought it was to encourage us to clean the grout on a more regular basis.

This type of brightly glazed ceramic was made for only about fifty years, during the reign of emperor Minghuang – who ruled from 712 to 756 – when the Tang dynasty was at its height. At the time, the capital city Chang'an (modern Xian) was one of the most populous and cosmopolitan in the world.

Whale/Shoe bottle — Netherlands, c. 1685
Leather
A thing that looks like a shoe except over the heel there's an open mouth with some big teeth but then above that there's no opening to put a foot in and then if you go down to the tail (because it's a whale as well as a shoe) you can see that the tail unscrews and the whole thing is functionally a bottle. the Rijksmuseum thinks this was probably done as a show off piece by someone in the cobbler's Guild to show how good their leather working was

I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.

the position of the administration it seems is that it is illegal discrimination and divisive racism for historically excluded groups to organize on that basis to improve their position. it’s basically just a genteel version of david duke’s complaint that there wasn’t a NAACP for white people

I know it is beside the point because this administration simply wants resegregation but conferences for Black professional associations have always been open to everyone. Typically, the started as a response to white exclusion, and did not replicate that.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

A little disturbing to find an empty gun safe lying open at the side of the road.
Gun safe or gun case? Hard plastic lockable case with foam cutout for a pistol.

Has anyone ever been told their "cardiac age" after their routine six month annual physical before? Is that a thing that actually happens somewhere other than in the Walter Reed platinum suite?

Absence of a plan for the people of Gaza is very worrying. So many - including thousands released from harsh prison conditions - returning to find their homes and neighbourhoods reduced to rubble. No-one yet offering any hope, and from what I hear Trump refusing to discuss.
