#NZ Cutting the flu tracking service 😔

- it seems a weird thing to cut given it’s not a "big budget" item
- if you’ve read on pandemic planning you’d know this is the sort of thing we need to step *up*, not drop. Feels like cutting off your nose to spite your face
Plan to ditch flu tracking tool will leave big data gap, epidemiologist says
The Ministry of Health is not renewing its contract for the FluTracking tool, which surveys about 40,000 people year-round, in a bid to cut costs.

Kākābeak/ngutukākā: Ngutukākā is a plant of special significance to New Zealand. Ngutukākā is named for its beautiful red flowers, which hang in clusters of 15-20 blooms and are shaped liked kaka's a beak. Hence Ngutu meaning beak/lips and Kākā meaning the native parrot of the same name.

Apropos to a post I'm not going to quote: no, you are not fucking obliged to battle the fucking right on fucking social media, or go to where they are. Why make yourself miserable shouting at bots (who don't care) or trolls (who get off on your misery). Make your fucking social media enjoyable, FFS.

So there is already an ai-generated whitewashing campaign to bury the name of the Muslim man, Ahmed al Ahmed, who disarmed one of the Bondi Beach shooters, and replace his identity with a white guy name and that’s why even a thimble of our potable water powering this tech is too fucking much.

Australia is quietly rolling out age checks for search engines like Google
Just as Australians are adjusting to the idea of having their ages checked for social media, age assurance rules are being applied to search engines and many other corners of the internet.

One thing I worry about these social media bans is how it’ll be for deaf kids.

People with deafness have long used text-based services to chat – they can’t ring using voice on phone. They could text, but social media chats are much more flexible, dynamic, and are "free" with an internet connection.
