The fact that protests now feature people who don’t normally have to worry about what might happen to them in an adverse encounter with security forces is a HUGE DEAL.

It means that the “real” victims don’t have to suffer alone. It means that some people care about something more than themselves

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

I'm just one person, and my programming needs are somewhat unusual (building various kinds of statistical forecasting models). But I'm just not seeing the consistent productivity gains from LLMs that I would have expected if you'd asked me 6 months ago.

I'm saying you can't stop people from talking to and working with each other. That's not actually a thing. The difference is whether we know who's working together under what set of values, or they do it anyway and we as voters don't know.

They shared the same money, the same resources, infrastructure, training, planning. They didn't need a "party" for that. The only point of being "independents" was to *hide* their common political agenda.

Let me give you an example from our local body election, which took place yesterday and which my OP is about.

There was a group of candidates claiming to be independents, claiming to be against party politics. They were all funded by the same local millionaire, who have been running campaigns...

our ward system also helps. it's no wonder so many people are getting overwhelmed when instead of a handful of candidates to research and choose from, they have to rank a list of ~40
