The fact that protests now feature people who don’t normally have to worry about what might happen to them in an adverse encounter with security forces is a HUGE DEAL.

It means that the “real” victims don’t have to suffer alone. It means that some people care about something more than themselves

Someone in my mentions is upset because these people haven’t suffered the worst at ICE’s hands and therefore they shouldn’t be praised for being out on the streets?

Yeah, no. To push back on these people we need everyone — especially those with relative privilege — to get up and get involved.

ICE kidnapped a 7th-grader with a pending asylum claim and spirited him out of state without notifying his parents, seemingly with the cooperation of the local police in Everett, MA.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

Would be super interesting to give me a 1995 desktop with contemporaneous software and a 32k modem and benchmark my actual performance difference. For a full year, like one of those Mars survival challenges in the desert.

Why is it that after half a century of modern computing, we still having won the argument against computer? I dunno I think it's because computers have gotten exponentially better at arguing back

This is the best medical/programming/economic advice I will ever give.

We will never stop arguing with our computers, and the only way to spend less time arguing with our computers is to go to sleep.

I'm just one person, and my programming needs are somewhat unusual (building various kinds of statistical forecasting models). But I'm just not seeing the consistent productivity gains from LLMs that I would have expected if you'd asked me 6 months ago.

I'm saying you can't stop people from talking to and working with each other. That's not actually a thing. The difference is whether we know who's working together under what set of values, or they do it anyway and we as voters don't know.

...for the last several years, including being a major funder of one our political parties.

They shared the same money, the same resources, infrastructure, training, planning. They didn't need a "party" for that. The only point of being "independents" was to *hide* their common political agenda.
keithng.bsky.social
Let me give you an example from our local body election, which took place yesterday and which my OP is about.

There was a group of candidates claiming to be independents, claiming to be against party politics. They were all funded by the same local millionaire, who have been running campaigns...

party affiliations made voting so much easier for me than it would have been.

our ward system also helps. it's no wonder so many people are getting overwhelmed when instead of a handful of candidates to research and choose from, they have to rank a list of ~40

At the moment, there's much too much need for reading between the lines in the candidate statements - e.g. is the almost de rigueur line about being responsible with council funds or stopping wasteful spending simply about not doing dumb stuff (such as redirecting the 3 Waters funding ...
