Just a reminder that Wikipedia is the only remaining reliable source of information that right wing billionaires can't control. (Although they'll never stop trying.)

Please donate to them whenever you can. Even a little bit helps.

People who act confused by Hamas' desire to free Barghoti are bizarre to me, Hamas wants him out even though he isn't Hamas affiliated because they believe he is one of the few, or maybe even the only, individuals who can unite the whole of Palestinian factions under the PLO

Generally mild-mannered @clrenney.bsky.social ripping the government a new one 🔥

#nzpol Sometimes a policy is so stupid it makes you question the very fabric of reality. Decisions so fabulously, almost wantonly dumb, you wonder if we actually live in a simulation. Welcome to the world of removing Jobseeker Support for 18 & 19-year-olds. craigrenney.substack.com/p/a-small-wr...
A small wrinkle in the Jobseeker policy
The government’s recent changes to benefits feel like this: the house is on fire, and this policy is them turning off the smoke alarm and saying it’s fixed

@samuelwa.de can a huge number of Chinese people no longer use their actual names on the internet anymore due to too much similarity to other Chinese people whose names are 'sensitive'

Oh, well everyone speaks English pretty much. Chinese of my generation will mostly have studied Mandarin in school to some degree, but main ancestral dialects are Hokkien, Teocheow, Hakka, Cantonese. My mum's family was the only Yunnanese family on the island when they arrived in the 50s.

Well fuck - Selwyn has elected a majority of Council with links to VFF, Act, and Trump fans. Maybe put that on the no fly list for the next three years

"we are just people. have you tried being fucking normal."

a unifying battle cry for everyone who is not a straight cis white man honestly, it reminds me of some calligraphy I just got off my uncle that says 'the Dao it is very simple actually'

English and Mandarin (and some French and Te Reo Māori) and about three phrases in Cantonese (all swears) and about three more phrases in Yunnanese which just sounds like Mandarin with only three tones.

After Baling he was used by the British as an expert on Communist tunnels, so I am assuming they mainly used him in tactical roles given he spoke no English or dialect (I don't think) other than Mandarin and Yunnanese - jungle security and intelligence support makes the most sense.
tzemingdynasty.bsky.social
Reading between the lines of the Chin Peng autobiography, I'm guessing he was either on the wires spying from the other room at Baling, or the SPAD of the terrible Singaporean governor, or one of the security squad for the British officer trying to set up back-channels in the jungle before/after.

The Olive green areas are councils where citizens voted down Māori wards (the little blue blob in the middle is Kirikiriroa, which voted by a whisker to retain theirs).
Coincidentally those Olive green areas also pretty accurately represent land confiscated by the crown after the Waikato wars.

lmao bought a basic smartwatch with a decent strap after losing one in long grass in Akl, & the PRC-based app wouldn't accept my name as a user ID due to 'sensitive words' specifically t*ZE MIN*g. I guess they are still blocking discourse on Jiang Zemin? Eventually they will run out of names.

Dompost Pundit voice: this result will mean the new mayor will need to reach across the aisle, at some risk of angering his base, in order to really build the legacy that the city so dearly needs and deserves

The new Wellington City Council will include 5 Labour councillors and 4 Green councillors, plus Andrew Little, giving the two party "coalition" an increased governing majority - 10 out of 16 votes, compared to 8 under the previous council.

Was my maternal grandfather some kind of postcolonial Zelig or was he as much of a compulsive liar as my paternal grandfather? An intergenerational mystery.

I really wanna find some description of him by a third party to triangulate against the mythos of my family stories, which surely have got to be self-aggrandising, like surely LKY would not have asked a guy with such bad English to be his Minister of Propaganda

Oh shit yeah that makes more sense timeline-wise. This is all just second-hand from my aunty at this point so I gotta do more research!
