No wonder J.D. Vance hates us so much.
People are definitely setting up a barricade of trash cans and this couch, in the middle of the street where ICE is.

"That's my couch," said a woman standing nearby. "It's been on my porch for four years because it won't fit up the stairs. My neighbor will be pleased it's gone now."

Minnesota is meeting fear and division with decency and generosity.

Across the state, we’re seeing neighbors helping neighbors. Grateful to First Congregational Church in Anoka for inviting me to see that work in action today.

The funniest shit is that I feel like the huge turnout downtown is almost because of the cold not in spite of it. The fact that it’s -10 degrees out led to just more defiance, like thousands out there saying, it isn’t even that bad out.

I will just keep repeating. I have never never never seen anything like this. 30 years of reporting.
Have a larger story on this coming, but I’ve been embedded with this group, and this story from yesterday is part of what they’ve been doing in the city: religionnews.com/2026/01/22/h...

My “US Border Patrol are experts in dealing with children” t-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.

Both of my local liquor stores are closed. Liquor stores. In winter. In Minnesota. On a Friday.

Not exaggerating when I say that the collective action in Minnesota will be studied for generations if not centuries to come

I've talked to people on the ground about the strike here tomorrow, and the single thing everyone brings up is just how shockingly wide the support for the strike is. Businesses that no one would have expected to support it are doing so.
National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

“That's 40 *cents*. Cents are a form of currency one hundred times smaller than the reál. I'm not even going to take this. Come back when you have 130 reál.”

Isn't it... evil? The order of magnitude between what is asked of a person -- and what they have?

This is far from the most violent or horrific image to have come out of Minneapolis, but this one has hit me particularly hard.

The kid reminds me so much of my sons at that age. I feel vaguely nauseated when I look at it. A very powerful mix of rage and sadness.

It's a devastating photo.
Every Stephen Miller tantrum and DHS recruitment ad speaks in these existential terms about "defending your culture" to elide the fact that they need people with the courage to wear a mask while interrogating a sixth grader

In Preservation culture, asking payment for anything considered necessary for living (food, power sources, education, the feed, etc.) was considered outrageous, but asking payment for life-saving help was right up there with cannibalism.

Kind of confused by this. There are supposedly 5,000 ICE agents here already. 1,500 soldiers would do what? Where would they be sent? Are they just going to threaten to shoot observers (which is already happening)?
