I don't believe in politicizing lone gunmen more than necessary. I think it's necessary to ask how the Trump Administration's obsessions with immigration & superficial conceptions of criminality, & consequent operational shifts, have compromised our national security apparatus.
CNN on the D.C. shooter: He came here from Afghanistan in 2021. He applied for asylum in December 2024, went through another vetting process, and was approved for asylum in April of this year under the Trump administration.

It is also important to keep in mind that one of the first immigration actions Trump & Miller took was stranding the next batch of these Afghan refugees who were approved & waiting to come here. Essentially condemning them to persecution & possible torture or death.
this should go without saying but if you were one of the lucky few we did get out of Afghanistan during the withdrawal and we got you out because you'd been working with us, deportation back is likely a death sentence.

The fact that the first civilian casualty in the Pech River Valley was a civilian who turned himself in and was promptly beaten to death by a C.I.A. contractor really is a story that says it all. Afghan civilians will never stop being sin eaters for the horrors and follies we committed there.
I don’t see how anyone could see the evacuation of Kabul, people hanging from planes, crawling into wheel wells, soldiers forcing Afghan civilians back at gunpoint and think “send all of them back”.
