look I know being an engaged citizen IS the work of democracy but it is also the work of elected officials not to create situations where everyone has to be mobilized all the time to prevent them from allowing some kind of Dickensian horror on a Sunday night while you're in between loads of laundry

Pure cruelty.

Officially, stores cannot give SNAP recipients preferential treatment absent a waiver, w waivers given to places encouraging healthy eating.

So obvs a rule aimed at preventing junk-food places from targeting SNAP.

This is … SO much not that.

And this enforcement is a CHOICE.
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days.
The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

this should become a thing, putting up signs like this for every arrest & disappearance in public spaces. it would likely break into lower info, less politically engaged demos and local social media groups

ICE wanted the San Francisco Standard to blur the faces of agents who were taking immigrants into custody.

The Standard told them "no."

"...we believe that censoring images from this news event would set a harmful precedent for the media’s right to report and the public’s right to know."
The ICE agents disappearing your neighbors would like a little privacy, please
After taking four people into custody at SF’s immigration court, ICE wanted The Standard to conceal agents’ faces.

I say this a lot, but many people don't realize that the income requirements for SSI are incredibly low ($2,000 for individuals) so even people who can and want to work, are limited to a certain number of hours so they don't lose benefits. It's a system that keeps disabled people in poverty.
They are in a rock and a hard place. SSI/SSDI work requirements keep them under an income level. Even those who can work part time, are continually paranoid about going over the cap, because medications, treatments cost way more than any income they receive. It's not the glamour life.

I firmly believe that this--anti-mask/free-floating ableism re COVID--is one of the reasons why people became cruel, disaffected and disarticulated enough from any sense of the collective good, disarticulated enough to happily usher in technofascism.
Cool how the net result of COVID-19 wasn't preventing deaths or changing society for the better or anything it was just letting all of you normal people indulge in your complete sociopathy toward the disabled freely and without restraint
Got into a fight with a NURSE who we asked to give us a little distance when we were at a picnic table eating. We told her we’re were trying to be Covid safe because I’m at risk. She said I should have just stayed home. I said at risk people should be socially isolated and lonely AND SHE SAID YES

In case you're still keeping track, we have detection of both a highly divergent BQ-derived variant that has been evolving within a chronically infected host for almost 3 years and a quadruple recombinant within the Pirola soup.
Earlier this month the XFL variant was defined, setting a new benchmark in SARS-CoV-2 evolution: a "quadruple-recombinant", meaning it’s evolutionary arc includes 3 recombinant ancestors.

It’s a stark example of how we are giving this virus every possible opportunity to evolve.
