nuzzi / lizza misconduct imo enabled the destruction of so much public health & scientific research — and a resurgence in measles in the US. this is not petty tabloid gossip or inside baseball. that they went undetected or were rewarded while great reporters were laid off? it’s a huge system failure

People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

I've made about $17k all year, INCLUDING my adjunct teaching job.

There is this idea that anyone working in the arts has wealthy family help, and sure some do, but a lot of us are simply poor. If you enjoy someone's work please pay them for it. It is not greedy to want to be paid for your labor.
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

Some vaccines like COVID and flu don’t stop completely stop infection.

But they do reduce the risk of getting infected and greatly reduce severe illness risk.

They are still worth getting.

Since they are not 100% effective it’s also wise to add another layer of protection by wearing a mask.

I’m so shocked that the spoiled boy who built a platform to objectify and rate his female classmates grew into spoiled billionaire with a platform friendly to sex traffickers. SHOCKED
We should rest assured that on Mark Zuckerberg's watch, nobody, and I mean nobody, will do sex trafficking eighteen times.

DOGE was created for data theft and infrastructure dismantling and it wildly succeeded on both counts within the first few weeks of its existence. It will take a generation to rebuild what it destroyed and the breach of data is unprecedented.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.

Ventilation was one of the original public health measures featured in early building codes in London and New York City. While contaminated water supplies were the real cause of cholera and typhoid outbreaks, airborne disease spread and high CO2 levels continue to plague modern buildings today.

Re Lizza's "catch-and-kill" offhand accusation, either

1. It's true and BOTH of them (since he knew about it) are now not-even-that-tangentially responsible for RFK's attempts to destroy public health in America

2. It's false and both of these people should never have jobs in journalism again

Why is startup culture always “I am inventing a coffeeproof phone you can put in your coffee cup to keep it warm with cell radiation” and never “I’m inventing a new library wholesaler to replace the single company that is shutting down and sending libraries into crisis”

This would be my guess, too. You get people like Ezra Klein and Chris Hayes overusing this term in places where “unique” or “totally unique” is just as accurate and in fact preferable in terms of accessibility because they’re so used to trying to signal belonging to certain intellectual class
I think it's even better than it seems on the surface. I think he knew exactly what it meant, but figured many of those watching wouldn't.

Must read thread about how LLMs confirm & reinforce delusions
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

Breaking character: I am open to the idea the media's coverage of Biden's age and mental acuity was fair or perhaps not even tough enough. But the fact that it was so much tougher than the coverage of Trump's (more severe) mental decline is damning and I can't see how anyone could argue otherwise.

A horrifying graphic from Pew showing the fruits of the right wing war on public health.

Only 48% of Republicans believe that vaccines prevent serious illness, while 80% of Democrats do.

This is not a difference of opinion in science. This is the result of a ruthless disinformation campaign.

If democrats ever control the US government again it will have to result in a massive audit of all gov hires done during the Trump admin and equally massive round of firings and prosecutions. If they make the same mistakes they made during the Biden administration there’s no remedy for the rot

It’s the kind of run of the mill ableism any kind of chronically ill person can tell you runs so deep in our culture that even the most progressive people ascribe to it to some degree. It’s also the wizard behind the wellness curtain. This is not a uniquely right-wing ugliness, unfortunately
Setting aside the obvious reality that many people develop medical conditions unrelated to behaviors (eg, type 1 diabetes), 80-90% of our health is shaped by non-medical factors like poverty, housing, education, transportation & access to healthy food. The personal responsibility frame is unhelpful.
Markwayne Mullin: "Reward people for being healthy. Think about this. Healthcare is the only industry that you're not rewarded for taking care of your responsibility. If you think about homeowners insurance, if you're within 500 feet of a fire hydrant, your insurance goes down."

I wonder, what would've happened if the majority of doctors, out of decency, professionality, and caution, had put on a respirator... many people would now be wearing respirators in public spaces. They were one of the key factors in demonizing and throwing away the minimum precautionary principle.
