“Words like ‘freedom,’ ‘justice,’ ‘democracy’ are not
common concepts; on the contrary, they are rare. People are not born knowing what these are. It takes enormous and, above all, individual effort to arrive at the respect for other people that these words imply.”

I don't have much to say about Olivia Nuzzi, but it's emblematic of our culture at large that what should have been a career-ending scandal resulted in a sweetheart high profile book deal and a fawning tongue bath profile in the paper of record.

Shocking, reprehensible, and absolutely damning that the president of the United States would shake his finger in the face of a woman journalist and say, “Quiet! Quiet, *Piggy!*” because he didn’t like being questioned about Epstein.

Truly disgusting. Just a horrible, misogynistic contemptible man.
When asked if there was anything "incriminating" in Epstein's emails, Trump pointed a finger in a female reporter's face and snapped. 'Quiet. Quiet, Piggy.'

I’m not going to pretend it’s easy to say something in the moment when you witness the president do this and you’re aboard Air Force One with all the uniformed officers and secret service and fancy wood accents, but this is really an instance where you should. people.com/donald-trump...

“One thing that stuck out to me was [AG Bondi’s] insistence that we served at the pleasure of the president and that we were enforcing the president’s priorities.

We swore an oath to uphold the Constitution.”
Absolutely no way to read this and not conclude that the Department of Justice has been deeply corrupted. And this is from a time when career lawyers were in place, pushing back against illegality. With firings and resignations, the politicization will just get worse.

The White House’s recent interactions with Pakistan, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia offer a case study in how foreign policy isn't supposed to work:

Foreign officials are learning how to get favorable U.S. treatment through flattery, gifts, lobbying, business deals, or some combination thereof.

at one point, i watched a cook county sheriff’s officer (who appears to be in charge) point out a priest in the crowd.

he and a couple officers then went into the crowd , dragged him into the street, and arrested him.

situation is still tense as crowd jostles with police to get into the street.

“I do not understand why the Board members involved did not say from the very beginning that forcing the resignation of the president [of UVA] because of federal pressure is off the table…they did not recognize and convey
that this was an outrageous incursion into the Board’s own authority…”
Former UVA president Jim Ryan, who resigned over the summer due to pressure from the Trump Administration, just shared this 12-page letter with the Faculty Senate, detailing his experience with the Board of Visitors and DOJ.

It's a surreal--and troubling--read.

this

(although, respectfully, “solidarity” is far too generous a word, in my opinion…)
What the Epstein files show is the *solidarity* of many men-across class, race, religion, profession & party affiliation-in the global political project of keeping the boot on women's necks.

People have no problem understanding class solidarity among the rich. Why can't they see gender solidarity?
Like I dunno, maybe the reason it took a lady to break open the story of all the men protecting the dude trafficking underage girls is because the male journos were all emailing him making jokes about it?
