I spent 3 weeks on a cargo ship in the Arctic, from Canada to Greenland. Our only company was blizzards, killer whales, thick fog and icebergs. Here is my story about how the West is lagging seriously behind Russia in the Arctic, and why it's so difficult to catch up

Inside the West’s Race to Defend the Arctic
Sailors scanned for icebergs on a nine-day journey to the U.S.’s northernmost military installation this summer—part of an effort to erode Russia’s vast advantage in the region.

This whole movement is one of the greatest activities in the information domain that I have seen from Americans over the past 9 months. Bravo.

Major media outlet falling down on the job of explaining that political influencers are the new propagandists in a take that could illustrate a class on Manufacturing Consent.

Should the New York Times be sold to Pennysaver and its editors sent to work in Amazon warehouses? It depends on who you ask.

For some reason all week I keep thinking of the line from the Stand — “we are dead and this is hell”

It’s good to know this many millennia on, men still don’t understand anything about women’s bodies, but love to find new ways to demean them while making money off of them, nonetheless

✈️ F-16 fighter jets, provided to Ukraine as part of military aid, carry out about 80% of all combat sorties flown by the Ukrainian Air Force.

These combat aircraft are used, in particular, to intercept Russian cruise missiles and Shahed kamikaze drones.

I think this is a key thing between early AI adopters and creatives — whether or not you view the process happening in your brain as the whole point, or whether you think the computer is making boring or “hard” things faster so you can do something else

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

“Don’t you want someone else to die before you” is not a question moral leaders in a democratic society ask voters

“Isn’t your life worth more than <<points>> *them*” is not the beginning of anyone’s better America

This is how men like Putin control their people while failing to give them anything

David Bowie — worldbuilder. Morph. Technologist.

No one like him. Cannot imagine him living in this current insane timeline.

Incredibly cool article on the David Bowie Archive in London

"Look at Ukraine. They’ve been fighting the enemy with weapons in hand for four years, and they are not complaining. Because they can’t retreat. If they surrender, they lose everything. If they don’t, they survive." There is no time for despair. We, too, have no way to retreat. 6/12
