I was trying in vain to figure out what Trump's game was in Venezuela, and now @mollymckew.bsky.social has written a brilliant two-part piece explaining it all...and, spoiler alert, it's not good for America, but very good for Russia, and is absolutely terrifying.

Much like the Milei bailout announcement, this is just overt election interference, and I’m just constantly surprised we don’t even comment on it anymore

And relatedly, @mollymckew.bsky.social makes interesting points here about how the absurd effort to designate "narco-terrorists" as the new enemy is really a war over reality, a war to create our own reality in this hemisphere. The memes are also deeply sinister.

Some of SECDEF’s rhetoric about lethality + preparing to win scratches an itch w/ US troops from my generation, frustrated by 20 yrs of messy counterterrorism

But most of them see stuff like this and understand the inherent danger of a man glorifying war crimes interfering in their chain of command
Imagine being a career officer in the chain of command on Trump's boat bombings. You have deep moral and legal concerns about them. Your faith in leadership is shaky. Then you see Pete Hegseth tweet out a sadistic cartoon about it. Must be awful.

Thoughts on this:

The focus is on “drug boat” strikes, but there are competing justifications for escalating military action against Venezuela — “cartels”, oil, bravado, liberation

But the war on Venezuela isn’t about those things

It’s about redefining—diminishing—American power

"Never spread the lie in the headline" should be a hard rule of 21st century journalism.

Research shows that repeating lies helps to spread them, and people read headlines more than they read stories.
News media has to do better with headlines that present false and unverified public health claims.

As I wrote about the “peace” deal, it was a plan for Russia & the US to divide up resources that should go to Ukraine in a sweeping attempt to comprise American security
