In sixth grade I used the word "stolid" in a paper and my teacher marked it as a spelling error, then accused me of cheating when I tried to argue, so I like to put it into each of my books as a cute little fuck you to that lady.

This is the first History Reclaimed attack on @davidolusoga.bsky.social’s BBC Empire series, in The Spectator. The thread on its recycled Telegraph version shows how criticisms of the representation of Mike Mountain Horse and the invasion of Ijebu are based on untruths. But else do they argue?

The prospect of a Reform-Tory pact makes it even more important Labour doesn't alienate the progressives it needs to vote tactically to keep the most right-wing, nakedly nativist, and climate denying political movement in modern British history out of government. They have to understand that, right?

Very good doc on the costs of water privatisation: Thatcherite dogma to produce the only privatised water in the world. The Cornwall water scandal saw 20,000 people poisoned as they cut-costs pre-sell-off & then covered it up to aid privatisation. #PoisonWater

For an emergency that affects 1 in 6 hospital patients.

Help me understand why this is.

This reminds me a lot of that Daily Express front page recently about migrants dancing to music. Clearly anyone who receives any state help, no matter how basic or insufficient, should just sit in silent misery.

This is a heads-up about fake AI accounts which have proliferated across social media.

The screenshot is from a genuine thread asking for advice on a mountain route; there are plenty of useful, real human replies.
The attempted reply (we stopped it) looks very real - but it is from an AI bot.

This story is starting to make me feel I’m going slightly mad - maybe RR overdid the gloom, but the tax rises are paying for a) the welfare U-turns b) the £10bn-plus increase in headroom c) scrapping the two child limit d) bits of other spending eg higher local gov costs 🤷🏻‍♀️
