Very important vote. It makes repealing ICE surge funding the mainstream position in the party, with bipartisan support.
👀 Every Senate Democrat + Collins and Murkowski just voted for the Bernie Sanders amendment to repeal the $75 billion in additional ICE funding under Trump’s “big beautiful bill.” The measure failed 49-51.

The Legal Academy’s Leading Originalists Remain Breathtakingly Full of Shit
The conservative lawyers filing amicus briefs in the birthright citizenship case are making it very clear that there is only some “history” they care about.

Right now, MSP activists are getting a ton of extremely sympathetic press coverage; Will's ride-alongs have worked in everyone's favor. Will talking about what he's doing has encouraged other people to get involved.
I have begged over and over for other rapid responders to talk to press; I often end up doing it anyway because my risk tolerance is high and I’m already targeted. I always, always make the terms of press engagement clear: no other observer can be identified in any way.
@whstancil.bsky.social engage with media thoughtfully and keep comrades safe or let someone else do it. the movement will be just fine without your clout chasing

This is not only 💯 accurate, it has strong Elizabeth Bennett vs. Lady Catherine de Bourgh energy, and I am here for it!
I have refuted him every way someone can be refuted, in person, in print, and through an exhausting amount of threads. Now there is a brief, and I can read the brief. I will respond to the brief—the original communicative content of it, not whatever he feels like saying about it online next week.

So, incredibly, the White House has chosen to escalate in blue Minnesota and retreat in Maine to protect a vulnerable GOP Senator.

It's confirmation that Trump-Vance-Miller view ICE as a partisan govt-backed militia to attack blue America while propping up their regime. 1/

Gives Isaac Chotiner a run for his money.
NYU Law Prof. Richard Epstein has submitted his amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court on birthright citizenship. He has no expertise in this area and has never done, as far as I know, any substantial work on the history of the common law dating back to early modern and pre-modern England.

please remember that no matter how many “ICE is losing in MN” articles you read today, there is still a very real, urgent, ongoing crisis in Minnesota.

people need food and they need rent money. that has not changed.

Of course. And that’s why Dems need to lean in and work towards dismantling ICE.
First no funding.
Impeach Noem.
Demand hearings on ICE’s operation in MN.
Demand that Miller resign.

Don’t let up.
“An administration official gave away the game to Punchbowl News, admitting that these “de-escalatory measures” are about placating Senate Democrats so they don’t seize this moment to demand restrictions on ICE as part of any government funding package.”

Donald Trump Is Frightened
Trump wants to appear eager to minimize out-of-control clashes between government militias and protesters. But he doesn’t want to stop the things causing those clashes in the first place.

On Jan. 23, Wael died from complications related to Pompe disease, a rare genetic condition.

ICE has now denied Maher’s request to attend his funeral, his attorney says.

Until the moment they shot him, CBP was treating Alex the same way they’ve treated countless other observers and protesters. They’re lawless and out of control. Conspiracy paranoia will not help achieve justice here or shed light on what’s happening in Minneapolis.

Donald Trump must fire Kristi Noem immediately.

Or Democrats will initiate impeachment proceedings against her in the House.

We can do this the easy way or the hard way.

🧵 These wingnut State AGs and their phony baloney academic enablers can’t even be bothered to engage in serious legal analysis.
Here we have the state attorneys general brief arguing to overturn birthright citizenship, led by Tennessee and Iowa.

I’ll just start by highlighting that we now have historically inaccurate and methodically bankrupt law professors’ work at the top of the batting order.

This stuff matters.

it reveals pretty plainly that "merit-based hiring" means "you belong to the correct class and hold the right set of identities"
Odd how when people like Bari Weiss go on about 'merit-based hiring', what they mean is hiring nice-looking white boys from elite schools regardless of their experience.

There's been a lot of discussion about the echoes of the civil rights movement in the protests today, with people obviously drawing comparisons between the strategies, tactics and coalitions that were vital then and are still vital now.

But this post has me thinking about a different echo ...
I suspect right now Stephen Miller and the other nazis are meeting to discuss how a place not as “nice" or "peaceful” as Minnesota will provide better oxygen for their lies and goals of martial law.

Bovino is just the patsy - a noxious and odious fall guy. Stephen Miller is the architect and prime mover of the whole thing. Everything they do is at his direction - often after his threats. As long as he runs policy in the WH, nothing will change no matter how many Bovinos come and go.

When I teach Vietnam, I explain that opposition to the war really grew in fits and starts. Some big rallies and visible protests, but also a steady stream of celebrities and ordinary folks breaking with their priors and taking a new stand.

This last month, this last week, feels like a real shift.
