Never forget the railroaders who moved quickly and bravely to keep it from being much worse—especially Larry Krupa, who ran toward *40-storey flames* to uncouple burning cars so the rest of the train could pull away.
46 years ago I woke up to massive explosions and a tower of fire 2 miles away. My Dad thought the Russians had attacked.
A train derailment and exploded tanker cars created a cloud of chlorine gas over the city, so we evacuated with 250,000 other Mississaugans.

I have an idea: If city council votes to put more money into Lansdowne, the move could include renaming it to "Watson-Sutcliffe Park."
Whatever resulted, good or bad, would be tied to their names indefinitely.

I saw some commentary that this was the largest non-Covid-era deficit in federal history and it's probably worth dealing with that now.
I presume it's based on dollar value at the time the deficit was incurred, but that doesn't account for inflation or the changing size of the economy.

I’ve cited this example a lot over the years. Knight-Ridder didn’t have access to the president or his aides or the Rumsfeld clique, so they had to be real reporters.
There is some sad irony in McClatchy shutting its DC bureau the same day that Dick Cheney died.
That bureau (then Knight-Ridder) did some of the best, most skeptical reporting anywhere in the run-up to the Iraq War. And they took a lot of shit for it at the time.

Workers replacing lights along the Rideau Canal paths have finished up by putting in new soil and sod where they’ve dug up trenches.
Here, they’ve done it on a slope next to a deep depression where the path itself is failing. It fills, wall to wall, with maybe two inches of water every rain.
