“Why do authors always—“
I’m gonna stop you right there. Because it sells books. Because it sells books! If a large group of authors is consistently doing something, it’s because it works. You can hate whatever it is, but don’t shit on authors for making business decisions.

Access journalism has almost completely replaced actual journalism at most mainstream publications. The threat of losing that access keeps these people cowed.
Why do journalists have no apparent solidarity whatsoever? This rancid POS jabs his finger in a woman reporter's face and calls her "piggy" and none of the other journalists there says a word?
When asked if there was anything "incriminating" in Epstein's emails, Trump pointed a finger in a female reporter's face and snapped. 'Quiet. Quiet, Piggy.'

One side thing the Epstein emails really showcase is why all these titans of industry and politicians and such are so all in on LLMs. It's because they're all functionally illiterate.

If you can't read and write, large documents become terrible ordeals to write, read, and comprehend.

I wish I could afford a 4K monitor that gets as bright as Apple's laptop screens. I have a pretty nice 27" Dell and an okay 32" BenQ, but neither of them get close to the brightness or contrast ratio of my MBP.

Every excerpt I've seen from Olivia Nuzzi's book about her relationship with RFK Jr. absolutely screams of someone staring into a puddle and desperately trying to convince themselves it's a lake.

Got the results back for my TCF test (French proficiency). B1. 😢 Which is exactly what I was expecting but I'd hoped to scrape by with a low B2 so I could apply for citizenship and not have to take the test again. Now I'll have to pay another €160 and burn another saturday sometime in 2026.

The mind of a person who thinks it's a good idea to start screaming at a tennis match as one player is winding up to serve, earning an admonishment from the judge and shushing from the audience, is as alien to me as that of a housefly.

access journalism isn't real journalism — it's stenography. these students are getting the worst impression of journalism
Shawn McCreesh, who wrote today's misty water-colored nostalgia story about Jeffrey Epstein's "Lost New York" at NYT, told St. John's j-school students last year that journalism is great because “It gives you this all-access pass to interact with these people we would otherwise never come across.”

The St. John’s University Division of Mass Communication held a virtual panel featuring New York Times political feature writer and St. John’s alumnus, Shawn McCreesh, as part of the Journalist Series...

New book is coming along nicely! Terrible, terrible things have happened to our princess, but she's not a gentle wilting flower. She's got a plan. It's going to get ugly from here.

Call an ambulance ... but not for her! 😄

Credit where it's due, MS appear to have fixed this bug. The badge is gone with the latest Word update on MacOS.
This shows up in Microsoft Word now in every single document even if you have Copilot turned off (which I do), and I'm just so tired of this stuff.

Okay, here's what's keeping me from switching to Unix:

1. I work w/ the publishing industry, who ALL use MS Word. I'm unsure if LibreOffice will work for that.

2. PC is my sole gaming platform. I haven't played a multiplayer game since 2006 tho ... so maybe that's fine?

... that's really it.

For me, the Metroid series ended with Super Metroid and I genuinely don't feel that I've missed out on a single thing.

We have repeatedly proven that guaranteed housing and basic income are overall beneficial for both the people who receive them and for society AND for the economy.

Only a deep seated and irrational resentment of someone else "getting a free ride" is really in the way.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

When Covid caused NYC offices to hollow out what they found was that yeah the core business districts suffered but the neighborhoods where people actually live, thrived.

All WFH means is rethinking business districts, not cities.
if you cant go in to the office 3 days a week then you really can't complain when cities are hollowed out. cities are places where ppl work and network. getting rid of that makes cities useless
And it's usually something like "but that's not what the literal DNC does!" as if I don't know, as someone who has worked on Dem campaigns, sometimes in conjunction with the DNC what they do. So I'm going to be very specific here: this is the DNC being shitty: www.nytimes.com/2025/11/12/u...

Folks, Bernie will be *87* years old in 2028. By the end of his first term, he would be 92. Come on.

I will vote for whoever the nominee is, but the only person on this list I'd be particularly happy to vote for is AOC, and that happiness would be tempered by my doubt that she can actually win.
Nov 6-9 poll on the 2028 election
% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning Independents who say their ideal choice for the 2028 Democratic nominee is:
Harris 21%
Newsom 19%
Buttigieg 10%
Ocasio-Cortez 6%
Sanders 6%
Booker 4%
Warren 3%
Shapiro 3%
Walz 3%
