For new arrivals…hi, I’m Sarah. I’m a law librarian and legal technologist. My past is EDU and A2J, but now work more with Big Law. I like making things better, open source and free law, professional development, and telling people they’re wrong. I live in rural USA with my 82 year old dad.

I grew up in a small town and we all have the same first three numbers so everyone just gave their phone number by last four digits so I mostly remember those.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

it's wild as hell that the GOP has had 15 years to come up with an ACA alternative that didn't fuck people over and really haven't. maybe find some policy people who can think of things other than "nothing good for non-white people" and "cut rich people's taxes"

I remember when people were questioning Obama's birth certificate, critics tied it to the "papers please" of authoritarianism. I believed them but I am still surprised at how fast we got to the literal version of that. anyway, everything happening was predicted. People warned us. Did you listen?

NEWS: ICE gave a Rogers Park man a $130 ticket for not having his papers on him. They rounded him up last week and eventually let him go, but not without a fine that some critics say is un-American. Trump admin enforcing little-used law

I feel like he tried that with Justin Trudeau but he was ready for it (and has a strong core) so it didn't work and kind of backfired on Trump.

The last No Kings in Chicago was like 90 percent older female protest veterans who've been derided as normie lib wine moms for the past decade so maybe we could start nagging, like, "woodworking dads" or find a way to condescend to 30-year-old men for a goddamn change.

We had Angela Davis speak at my university a couple of years back. One of the many insightful things she said - protest in the way that aligns with your passion. If that’s poetry do poetry or music etc. Because then you will be able to sustain it. If naked bike rides are your passion, 100% do that.

Someone in my mentions is upset because these people haven’t suffered the worst at ICE’s hands and therefore they shouldn’t be praised for being out on the streets?

Yeah, no. To push back on these people we need everyone — especially those with relative privilege — to get up and get involved.

I wonder if helicopter parenting and overly structured childhoods have left younger people unable to navigate life without guidance and so they keep trying to find tech crutches?

(I grew up in a farm in the 1980s. I did not experience that type of childhood so I’m spitballing here.)

It's been really, really nice seeing the Catholic social justice tradition in the US feel like it's empowered to spread its wings again without risking censure after a long time of being suppressed by US Catholic leadership, and it's exactly what I was hoping for from Pope Bob.

So I'm not Catholic (though I teach at a Jesuit university), and this thread piqued my curiosity. So a quick search led me to this.

And this hits tear-jerkingly hard: not only are they accompanying Jesus, but they've sanctified the place where people are being held unjustly. 1/
What is a Eucharistic Procession?
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the whole Christian life. A eucharistic procession, therefore, is a public witness of the veneration toward the most holy Eucharist, conducted through public streets. It takes place in this way: A consecrated host – that is, the real and substantial presence of Jesus Christ: body, blood, soul and divinity – is placed within a monstrance, which is then lifted and carried by a priest who leads the faithful in procession. Like a pilgrimage, a eucharistic procession normally starts at one holy place and ends at another. This earthly journey reminds the Catholic faithful of their spiritual journey toward eternal life with God.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

I know Trump and his minions all have sneering contempt for kids with special needs, but trust me when I say that their parents will absolutely fucking destroy anyone who messes with the special education supports to which they are entitled by law.

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.
