I'm going to do a history exploration of shmups, like I did with fighting games a few years ago.

I will play all shmups, beginning with the ones in arcades, starting from... 1962. It will allow me to see trends and some influences, and determine once and for all which is "the first shmup to do X".

You can read what Marc wrote about it instead
bsky.app/profile/marc... - the post I was replying to originally

I'll mention the mysterious football title that people don't seem to know was coming to arcades another time

From the Days of Mana specials in Nintendo Power: Katsuya Terada's visions of the world of The Secret of Mana, which, like their illustrations for Link's Awakening, lend the game a darker, more mature vibe akin to the artwork you might see in a Wizardry game.

Any political “leader” still selling the obviously false choice between #ClimateAction and “the economy” is just reminding us that they clearly don’t understand either the climate crisis OR the economy.

Or they’re cynically hope that WE don’t understand the difference.

Or both.

We did something different with the credits for Demonschool. We used this format: name, title, lengthy description of what they did. Often you see credits in games where you don't know what the credited developer was actually responsible for. We wanted to give people proper, actual credit.

This week on zilogandmoto.com, Episode #309. Alex Kidd in Miracle World was supposed to be Sega's answer to Super Mario Brothers. I think we all know how that worked out, but is still a good title?

Here is a list of shmups that I think are great beginners or casual entry points in the genre, with easy difficulties or features like rewind. I'm still a bad shmup player myself.

All are available on Switch, most are also on PC and/or PS4/5.

Lately, Hollywood has been taking so much shit for rampant sexism and racism. The prevailing theme: white men dominate movie roles.

Please read Oh Five's thread and comments, but yeah, the entire game balance has been affected too by the removal of the slowdown the game was built around. No adjustments were made to account for it, so it's now harder due to the iffy collision detection.

Not a mention of any of this in Nintendo Life's or the other two reviews I just read calling HD Boosted the definitive edition.

Delta is incredible and deserves better than a hack job of speeding the game up. Hold off buying until fixed, if you were thinking of buying it, peeps.
Here's the in game finale to R-Type Delta which is running so fast the buildings no longer sink, all particles are missing & the music hard cuts as it's all been scrolled off-screen. The whole game's like this, so the music sync'ing to the action in st.3, lol no etc

Also missing enemies, bugs etc

I made a video retrospective on arcade single-screen platformers. What made this genre flourish, and then fade away? How is Bubble Bobble similar to The Binding of Isaac? And where does the farting penguin come into the story? Tune in to learn all this and more!

I'm invoking what little clout I have as a prominent uploader and fan of Sega Genesis/Mega Drive music to call upon the community to stop this already. This technically naive bit of misinformation has been bouncing around for decades at this point. (see alt text)

A sad fact of emulation is that you're not experiencing games as they were. The original was a 2-players side-by-side behemoth cab, much more fun than the single player we're experiencing. Like playing a multiplayer FPS only with bots.

I've mentioned Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains before, but its Silk Road setting deserves more praise

It goes from Francia to Venice, Damascus, Baghdad, Tashkent & Chang'An, following historical events of ~750 AD like the Abbasid revolution, the Battle of Talas, and Tang Dynasty crisis.

It's so cool that to disable these shit features that lots of people hate you have to dig deep into settings instead of having a simple toggle in the options.

the literal beat for beat events of the ending of Final Fantasy XIII are entirely impossible to understand or even speculate on without the context of a lore video released in a 2011 press conference
After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

When retro gamer was launched the c64 was 20 years old. The SNES barely 12 in the uk. It covered both. Theoretically on that basis they could be covering the ps4…

So Google decided to enable "Smart Features" by default (tbr as AI training purposes), here's how you can disable Google from reading your personal stuff, mind you the bastards tied the spellcheck to this features so you won't be able to use it without the Smart Features. Here's how to turn off.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.
