I'm going to do a history exploration of shmups, like I did with fighting games a few years ago.

I will play all shmups, beginning with the ones in arcades, starting from... 1962. It will allow me to see trends and some influences, and determine once and for all which is "the first shmup to do X".

Remember when the Oliver Twins were creative?

Now, they are just another pair of aging "techbros" looking to shit out slop for a quick buck. Truly pathetic.
...and here's the first trailer... 😬

"hey I'm going to do a modern version of an early 80s classic, it should be easy, using all the modern tools we have now!"

(Several weeks later)

"Holy cow how did they do it?!?"

It's a Ponzi scheme. And these people at our universities have got us involved.
"Many of the deals OpenAI has struck — with chipmakers, cloud computing companies and others — are strangely circular. OpenAI receives billions from tech companies before sending those billions back to the same companies to pay for computing power and other services." www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Megadeth all the way, I find Metallica pretty boring. Although I have no clue about whether either of these bands have bad people.

So, today I'm announcing a new book project... and doing a call for papers: crpgbook.wordpress.com/2025/10/31/t...

It's an anthology of video game history outside the usual US perspective - an accessible & exciting panorama of different realities - and I'll pay 300 USD per article.

Please share :)
The Video Game History Expansion Pack – Pitch your story
Today I’m putting my money where my mouth is and launching a new project — a book focused on game history outside of the usual North American perspectives.

Vulgus (Capcom, may 84)

The very first Capcom game: a basic vertical shooter with two shots, and a rank system that you can drop down with various powerups. It was slightly popular back then, but today I think it's too basic.

Oui clairement en écoutant une vidéo puis l'autre on passe d'une voix naturelle à Google Maps qui essaye de prononcer un nom de rue que même toi t'y arrives pas.

Too bad it's f*ing Limited Run aka "pay double to ship outside of the US" 🙄 and with them you never know if something will have a regular release elsewhere...

Cobra Command / Thunder Storm (Data East, may 84)

Another Laserdisc shooter where you just move a target across the screen and hit directions; it stands out with its cool "anime" look. It was popular at the time, and is one of the rare LD game still fun today.

Hole Land (Tecfri, apr 84)

A hybrid of whack-a-mole and gallery shooter, with quite a lot happening all the time. It's pretty fun, but I imagine that at the time, it must have looked almost retro compared to all the scrolling that was going on.

It was my childhood console but I didn't play a lot of good games back then.

Today I'd say something like: Streets of Rage 2, Shinobi 3, Flicky, Wonder Boy Monster World, mmhh... There's also a lot of games I haven't really replayed for years like Landstalker, Chiki Chiki Boy...
Happy birthday to my favourite 16-bit console. ⚡💜

As we watch the big publishers collapse on themselves or seek money from corrupt sources, I'd argue it's time to let AAA gaming go.

Every now and then, legacy publishers may put out a cool new blockbuster.

But we're far better off supporting the mid-sized and smaller publishers making good games.
I still think the Xbox 360 was powerful enough and later generations have mostly been a huge waste of power.
Nintendo's strategy of targeting lower-spec hardware and then conquering limitations with good art design seems like it ought to the prevailing philosophy going forward.

For many gamers, the original Switch is still good enough.

That's very telling about what gamers expect today!

We've reached a point where added graphical fidelity doesn't make games better.

It's very hard for most people to tell the difference between games created 5 years ago and today.

There's a lot that can be done with current hardware that just isn't being tried. That's the real opportunity.

I'm not against AAA games. I just think the model has become unsustainable because the way those games are built is about huge teams rather than making good use of development resources to create memorable experiences.

When most of the games people play are 6-10 years old, AAA seems misguided.
