I've been playing High on Life today.

It's quite fun and reminiscent of early Rick and Morty craziness, but I am a little conflicted since it's a Justin Roiland game.

Since I didn't buy it (playing on PS+), I feel less bad about enjoying it, but I sure hate it when creative people do awful things

I have one more ESSENTIAL ORDER series I'll post on Bsky, and that's Metroid.

For that series, it's more about "What's the best order to play these games in?" than which to skip.

I advise skipping Metroid NES (play GBA's Zero Mission instead), Other M and Federation Force.

Easy enough!

Again, you can take or leave my opinions on Metal Gear Solid, but you can also be assured I've played (and mostly enjoyed!) every one of them and these opinions come from a place of genuine affection for the series!

I think the GBC MGS and Acid2 surprised me the most.

And Ground Zeroes grew on me.

Continuing my ESSENTIAL ORDER series, let's tackle the mainline Metal Gear Solid games!

The idea is that I'll list a sequence of landmark games in the series newbies should play if they want to be introduced to everything the epic series has to offer.

Feel free to disagree!

One thing I appreciate about game-related discourse on BlueSky is that it's largely respectful and comes from people who've actually played the games they're championing.

That's so different from other spaces online where a lot of peoples' views just come from Youtube hater videos they've watched.

Craving pizza? You will be after this jazzy electronica song!

It's from Pizza Tower and fittingly named "Pizza Deluxe!", with a fun vocal sample of "Pi-pi-pi-pizza!" included.

It's by Thomas "POST ELVIS" Torres (a musician with more than game music - postelvis.net).

Mindwheel is an incredible text adventure written by Robert Pinsky, a now-famous US poet laureate.

You delve into the mind matrices of four people from the past to try to piece together a solution to save the future. It's heady, wonderful stuff!

Tomorrow, I'll pick on another series with a lot of sacred cows: Metal Gear Solid.

And as you'll see, my advice is to play the even-numbered ones last because they are the most contentious and also the most willing to jerk players around.

MGS 1, 3 and Peacewalker/5 actually make a stronger series

Feel free to tell me my Street Fighter opinions are no good, by the way.

I've been playing the series since SFII in the arcades, so I feel entitled to have my own views!

(I've also played a lot of other fighting game series, so my opinions are at least qualified by extensive experience!)
November 29, 2025 at 3:52 AM
I also was rather surprised to discover some players like Street Fighter Alpha 2 over SFA3.

I've played both to death, but I gotta say, Alpha 2 only kept my interest until I got Alpha 3, a game I still play today.

I did love that Ryu/Sagat battle, though!

A little detail on why I dislike Street Fighter V.

It shipped incomplete w/ barely any single player mode and iffy netcode.

It had predatory DLC for years.

The mechanics are imprecise.

It's lazy, slow-paced and over-animated.

It leads in to SFIII's incredibly dumb story.

That's the gist of it!

A little detail on why I dislike Street Fighter III.

I first played it in the arcade and then all 3 Dreamcast versions.

I was playing it long before that famous Daigo/Wong match known as "Evo Moment 37."

While that was really cool, the game itself is only rewarding at that level of play.

Quoted for truth!

We all know why it happens - hating on popular things is fun and gets clicks - but wouldn't you love to live in a world where that sort of thing wasn't rewarded and we just celebrated what we love?
I really hate how Call Of Duty just sucks the oxygen out of the room. So, the campaign in the annual corporate franchise sucks this year? There's been more words written about that than probably EVERY OTHER FPS RELEASED THIS YEAR COMBINED.

And there have been so goddamn many, and so many great ones

If you've waited until now to play the original Danganronpa, $1.19 is a VERY good price for a wonderful murder mystery royale sort of game!

If you enjoyed the Zero Escape or Phoenix Wright games, this one will be right up your alley. And the sequels are on sale too!

The Silicon Dreams Trilogy is an ambitious and interesting series of sci-fi text adventure games (with a female protagonist) that shouldn't be missed.

Snowball in particular is an impressive game set aboard an enormous starship with many problems to solve.

Try 'em!

Tomorrow, I'm gonna tackle Capcom fighters for my ESSENTIAL ORDER series, because

1) Yes, I really feel there is a correct order in which to play them
and
2) I've played way too many of them not to have a lot of thoughts

So buckle up!

(And be prepared for me to hate on some sacred cows!)

You guys are going to think all I do is sit around and play Final Fantasy games after that last thread.

I have played WAY too many of them. But some of them I've enjoyed more than others.

I picked up Tembo The Badass Elephant on sale and I'm enjoying it!

I know it had a rough launch (it's a Game Freak game, so...), but it's a fun animal mascot platformer with a lot of destruction. My kinda game!

I may not finish it, but for under $4 it's solid.

Desert Commander is probably the closest thing we ever got to Famicom Wars on the NES, and it's a surprisingly underrated game.

Simple, yes, but quite fun, and with a hotseat mode too!
