Publication time! I contributed a chapter (on director-composer collaborations from the 90s to present) to The Palgrave Handbook of Music and Sound in Japanese Animation — a v thorough guide that’s been much needed in the discipline. I’m thrilled to be part of it!

The Palgrave Handbook of Music and Sound in Japanese Animation
This handbook fills a gap in the academic literature on animation at large, music studies, and the role of the aural dimensions in Japanese animation.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Those weird church musicals that would use the Avengers and Disney characters to tell the story of Jesus' death and resurrection, do at least have the utility of giving me an easy way to explain to students what a "passion play" is (when explaining Bach's St. Matthew Passion)

a real tell in all of this is that the trans instructor wasn't alone in trashing this essay! a whole other person also said they agreed completely that it sucked. but as far as i can tell only the trans person is getting punished. www.oklahoman.com/story/news/e...

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" has always been my favorite of the first group.

Haven't thought about the latter, and I'm divided between several but let's go with "Silver Bells." As a city mouse, always loved its celebration of urban holidays when so many other Xmas songs are about the countryside
What is your favorite "Christian" Christmas song and what is your favorite "Secular" Christmas song?

I will probably always adore "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" for Christian.

And "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" for secular.

for those not familiar with academic ranks, this means this class was a lower level one being taught by a graduate (likely PhD) student as part of their own financial aid package. At a state school like this they’d get their tuition paid & a stipend that usually works out to less than minimum wage

here is my story about how Zohran's focus on community amid the loneliness epidemic helped young people connect their politics to an organizing infrastructure, that interviewed ZM, and does not use the NYT's framing of "they don't know how to make friends" :-) and also ran 4 days before NYT's lol
Zohran Mamdani's Establishment-Fighting Campaign Built Community for Young People
“What Mamdani has done is not only inspire and mobilize young people, but he has exposed the establishment and some of their calcified views of participation and inclusion.”

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.
