I tried to avoid reading this because I knew it would break my heart. And it did. And I am so, so glad I read it.
I hope you’ll read this story about Melissa Hortman’s life, her parents and children, her love for gardening, her faith, and her approach to public service. It’s not about how she died, there is infinitely more to know about her than that. She is so missed.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.

mass shooting are dramatic and horrific evidence of our desperate need for gun control. they're really only the tip of the iceberg though.

gun suicides and accidental gun deaths kill more people than mass shootings. and they're both also out of control in the US.

When I first heard about the shooting at Brown, I thought "well, it's been awhile since the last school shooting" but apparently that's completely wrong—it's just been awhile since one made the news so loudly. Are we really so used to this that it's only rarely newsworthy?
The horrific tragedy at Brown University is the 389th mass shooting this year and the 230th gun incident on school grounds so far this year.

This is not normal and we don't have to live this way.

Powerful, quiet, devastating anger. Wow
I genuinely don't know if this is a "Minnesotan" thing or an "old guy of a certain age" thing but in case it's Minnesotan and people need an anger translator: this guy is so angry he could just about set something on fire with his mind.

Sheer viciousness. Deliberate harm to children
Banned words list has real consequences.
A Head Start program operated by a tribe on a Native American reservation was told not to prioritize tribal kids, in clear violation of Head Start Act. The program director also can’t do training on trauma-informed instruction, or to support kids with autism.

My daughter’s school bus was delayed this morning because armed ICE agents, some masked, were in the middle of 15th Ave in Cedar Riverside. So why wouldn’t ICE just get out of the way when the bus came? Perhaps they were busy harassing Somali-Americans, who are overwhelmingly citizens. But... (1/4)

The thing is... many of us have limits, boundaries, places we won't go, and that allows us to imagine that others have limits, boundaries, places they won't go. But they don't--not this administration. So normalizing *anything* just means having to normalize a bleeding edge farther out at some point
People keep wondering why they're going after Venezuela. It's because they want to do regime change and control its oil, then use a big tract of land there to keep a tax free "network state" that looks like Dubai but operates like Rhodesia. They are saying this out loud! Believe them!

Governor, when my wife was arrested at BroTex she had a team of attorneys — including legislators & a MN supreme court justice — trying to locate her & they were all stonewalled by Feds. There’s a pattern here.

But the point is that they shouldn’t be disappearing *ANYONE* regardless of citizenship!
