Having a January birthday in the Midwest never fails to suck. Lucky to have a partner that made me feel loved. Happy 5th birthday to our baby, Ruthie, also! 🥰

this subthread (which @marwoodlennox.bsky.social has talked about a lot over the years in ways I wish others would pick up on) goes to my point earlier about "stake in the world"
Again, I bring this up. Tech invested in media including social media as they thought their audience would be enamoured and love the tech industry. So they did the equivalent of hired a bunch of Bluesky Communists to write about the wonders of LLMs. bsky.app/profile/marw...
I keep going back to this interview with Gawker founder Nick Denton as a key text for understanding the past 15 years. Important here is Denton hired a bunch of young grads for his journal thinking they would have the same attitudes as SV start-up kids and noooo... www.vanityfair.com/news/story/n...

“Opposing views” take place in the middle spaces between good and evil.

The desire to eradicate or destroy or control a group of people isn’t an opportunity for dialogue
When dialogue dies, all change dies.

If you are not willing to talk to anyone with opposing views, then logically protest is also pointless, and you're down to either digging a hole to go die in, or killing everyone who disagrees with you.

Go read this mini-thread.

Internalize it.

ALL of this is the work.

And for some of us, that work is more existentially emergent than for others of us. Those without that danger should be on the front lines so that those who face it daily have room to survive and help in other ways.
Listen: because I am hearing this a lot from folks who are in caregiving roles with disabled, sick, dying folks, elders, or children in their care:

You are not unable to do anything or unable to take action.

Thought about history/perspectives on BW being home/doing communal care work (compared to working for yts)…but during CRM “domestic workers became central to the movement’s success.”

Care work is racialized and gendered, why some ppl downplay its role in movements vs. protest, hypervisible roles.

You are on the front lines already.

For the last 48 months I worked tirelessly to protect Virginia from Glenn Youngkin.

At the start he controlled everything BUT our one seat Senate majority.

Together we stood up and fought back!

Now his era has passed and the clean up can begin.

Welcome Governor Spanberger!

MAGA voters chose anger and bitterness over the welfare of their own family, friends and neighbors. And when Trumpism is defeated, when this era of cruelty has passed, they will demand acceptance and forgiveness from those whose feelings and fears they tossed aside. They will want to forget. Never.

We just saw this, and it’s a good idea for businesses to post. Private businesses are allowed to set dress and conduct rules. Requiring no full face coverings has long been standard for safety and loss prevention reasons, and it is within a business’s rights to refuse entry or service.

We've heard a number of reports now of DHS agents at Whipple confiscating arrestees' phones and refusing to return them. Talked with a guy several nights ago who said they wouldn't give his back, and there were more reports of it last night. Just something to keep in mind/be aware of.

A few days ago, Fox News was whining about ICE agents getting heckled at a Mexican restaurant in Minneapolis.

Meanwhile, in the town of Willmar, ICE agents had lunch at a Mexican restaurant, waited until it closed, then confronted and arrested three workers as they left.
