Paul Theroux is a great travel writer (although I could never get his fiction). But yes, he suffered from that generation affliction's of writing embarassingly horny prose to kill the mid-century concerned church mother in his head (this is also the context of e.g. John Banville).

There's been a lot of doomerism about Trump possibly cancelling the midterms or at least thumbing the scale massively. Maybe, but I'm sceptical. On the other hand, looking at Argentina this discourse is underrating the prospect they will resort to simply bribing the electorate in a very stupid way.

The Realms of Arkania games have a special place in my heart, especially the first one, Blade of Destiny. The Amiga version was my first experience of an open-world, free-roaming CRPG and became one of my core experiences in the genre.

Enough that I cobbled together my own TTRPG version of it.

A thing I think doesn't get internalized enough in the discourse of the European subjugation of the Americas is that there was no way for contact between Europe and those continents to not end in abject disaster for indigenous Americans because of disease burden.

Had the Aztecs and Incas shown a bit more interest in the world surrounding them - and had they known what the Spaniards had done to their neighbours - they might have resisted the Spanish conquest more keenly and successfully.
