...I have just seen someone saying "servicemembers should refuse orders...that clearly violate the constitution" and while I agree, there is a distinct messaging problem here. Friends, SCOTUS often can't agree on what violates the constitution. You want 22yo business majors to figure it out???

It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

It's all over cross-stitch patterns as well. I'm looking only for patterns made pre 2023 at this point. Much of the patterns on etsy are chatgpt generated slop.

Alles Ist Gut (2018)

A completely un-cinematic movie about the grinding banality of seeing your rapist every day. Incredibly realistic performances that take a sledgehammer to the tiresome tropes about life after sexual assault one expects to find. 5/5

This one really is useful because you won’t see a more clear demonstration of one of the most damaging political phenomena of the era: the reactionary professional mind rejecting unacceptable reality, only able to process and comprehend it via something close to conspiracy theory.
Former Obama speechwriter Sarah Hurwitz says Jewish students shouldn’t have smartphones until they finish high school — so they don’t see the “carnage” Israel and the U.S. have carried out in Gaza.

Putting the obvious moral imperative to one side for a moment, am I the only one thinking that maybe not creating that 'wall of dead children' in the first instance would be an easier solution than a unenforceable blanket ban on mobiles for Jewish kids? Why is not killing kids a hard choice for her?

This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:
